On German citizenship

May 25, 2009 11:49

For years I've heard conflicting things about my eligibility for German citizenship. My situation is thus:

I was born in 1981, in Australia, to German nationals. Simply being born in Australia was enough to grant me Australian citizenship.

My entire family was naturalised Australian in 1984. I wasn't, because I was already an Australian citizen.

I've just been doing some reading. Specifically:

My mother and/or father was/were born in Germany. Does this mean I can become a German citizen?

This page implies that I was born with German citizenship, as my parents were German nationals when I was born.

As well as German nationality, our child has had a second nationality since birth. Does our child have to choose between the two in later life?

This page clearly states that if I was born with German and Australian citizenship, I am entitled to permanent dual nationality.

I've already fired off an email message to the German Embassy in Canberra.  I hope I get a swift response...  I might also ask at the Auswaertiges Amt (Foreign Office) in Germany.
