Alternate London, Friday evening

Mar 06, 2009 18:46

So after about a dozen calls to Portalocity, Parker got someone who apologized for her impromptu portal-napping, and got her a place to stay the night before.

Apparently, this London was used to this sort of thing. No big. And they had an interdimensional exchange rate.

Which was why she was currently shopping for new boots in an open-air market lit up with firefly lights, and trying not to boggle as hard as she wanted to at the steam-powered 'difference engine' currently totaling up her purchase.

"Mrs. Speed, you're needed." Someone hooked an umbrella in the crook of her arm to turn Parker around.

She grabbed for it and yanked the owner around to glare at him. "Excuse you?"

The man stare at her in surprise. "My apologies, dear lady. I thought you to be my associate. Quite an uncanny resemblance from the back. Not many women wear trousers of that cut and boots that daunting." He gave her the once-over as Parker rolled her eyes, then tipped his bowler. "John Steele, and I would be at your service, but I've urgent business to attend to." He frowned, looking around worriedly. "Always assuming my associate is to be found."

"She's gone missing?"

"She was meant to be meeting me here, and she's never late." Mr. Steele recalled himself, and said, "But that's hardly your problem, and again, I apologize. Miss...?"

"Parker." She folded her arms, and looked thoughtful. "Could you use some help?"

"I couldn't possibly accept, and in any event, it would be far too dangerous--"

Parker glared at him again. "I'm bored, I'm rich, I'm armed, I'm interested. I have 24 hours here to do nothing else but shop. I'll help find your partner, and then I'll do a fade."

Speed pursed his lips, then smiled. "Right, then. Welcome aboard, Miss Parker."
