In that video of Condoleezza Rice responding to Ron Paul, she sure says "um" a lot.
Doesn't that seem odd for someone who's surely a polished public speaker and who's spoken extemporaneously on complicated matters countless times?
Not really, when you consider what the late Dale Leathers has to say in his book, Successful Nonverbal Communication. He opens one chapter with the precise quote from a 1979 TV interview with Ted Kennedy in which Kennedy is asked how his marriage is going. Kennedy's whole response, in which he tries to suggest things are going well, is little more than a string of "uhs." It's literally a textbook example of someone lying and doing a bad job of it
