WASHINGTON (AFP) - The US Congress rushed to hammer out agreement on a massive bailout of the financial system Thursday ahead of an emergency White House meeting called in hopes of sealing the deal.
US President George W. Bush, warning on national television Wednesday night that "our entire economy is in danger" of succumbing to "panic" if Congress did not act immediately, invited the two men vying to succeed him, John McCain and Barack Obama, to the White House summit scheduled for Thursday afternoon.
Bush announced the summit with the presidential candidates and top congressional leaders in a dramatic prime-time speech aimed at countering public unease over his administration's 700-billion-dollar Wall Street rescue plan.
