Embattled Israeli Prime Minster Ehud Olmert has officially stepped down after submitting his resignation to President Shimon Peres.
Olmert arrived Sunday evening at the office of Peres in al-Quds and formally submitted a letter of resignation to the president, Israel's public television reported.
The premier has been under investigation over a series of corruption charges.
Following Olmert's resignation, the president has almost one week to consult with the heads of Knesset factions and ask another legislator -almost certain to be Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni - to form a new government.
