The Dark

The lights go out. She pulls her covers up to her nose, peeking over the brim. Nervous round eyes scan the empty bedroom, which, moments before, had been a sanctuary of light, but was now a prison of shadows. A sudden movement catches her eye. In the corner, behind the rocking chair, Fear crouches with a leering grin. The beast’s sharp teeth glitter in the complete darkness. Anticipation shakes through his limbs as he tries to contain himself, anxiously pawing at the ground, trying not to pounce.

The closet door creeks open, allowing Horror to peek out at her. Red eyes glow from the shadow, teasing, mocking her nervous shudders. The monster in the closet growled. Fear began pacing the floor. Her fingers clutch the blankets so tightly, they were turning white. Slowly, her stare turns to the floor beside her. Terror’s gaze hypnotizes her into silence as he slithers from under the bed.

Suddenly, every monster turns to her and strikes. Horror leapt onto her bed, Fear gripped her throat, and Terror snatched her voice. Petrified silence pierced the still air.
