So let me set out the context a bit. There's this project that I've been working on for quite a while. Was doing it during the germination phase, and then worked on some of it as it started to pick up. Along the way, Female Colleague 1 (FC 1) joined the team and started helping me with it. Then, with my reservist training last month, plus the fact ( Read more... )

Wow, if I got shopping vouchers as rewards for working hard, I'd be the most motivated person in the office!
Seriously though, why don't most bosses treat their staff this way? I mean, just respecting them and seeing that they're human beings with feelings too. Most bosses are so caught up with fault-finding and project management that they just overlook it. I bet people would work so much harder and be happier if they knew their work was appreciated.

I agree with everything you said! If bosses were like that, I think people would be motivated and encouraged at work, even without shopping vouchers. I've learned so much about managing and motivating people in my current job, so hopefully if I ever get to the day when I have to manage people under me, I'd do an okay job.

I'm sure you'd do a great job as a boss (or die trying!), because you know what it's like being a small fry, working under the big bosses. Sometimes, I wonder about managers - don't they remember what it was like being the lowliest in the office? I mean, I would always try to treat my workers with respect, beause I know how demoralising it is working for a boss who doesn't think you're fit enough to tie his shoelaces.

Yes, I do wonder the same thing, which is why I hope I won't forget that should I ever get to a place where I have to start managing people.
