Earlier today I finished watching the 1995 BBC t.v. version of "Pride and Prejudice" with Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth. I watched the first three hours yesterday and the last three hours today. I love Jane Austen, especially this novel, so I was weary about the series even though I've heard nothing but great things about it. I ended up LOVING it! It is so fantastic! Even for those of you who have not read a single word of Austen should still try this miniseries at some point!
Jennifer Ehle is just so incredibly perfect as Elizabeth Bennet, I couldn't imagine anyone else playing the role (and no, I haven't seen the new version because I loathe Keira Knightley...plus, she could never act on this level no matter how hard she tries). She's a fantastic combination of what Elizabeth is supposed to be... beautiful/plain, sweet/fierce and romantic/cynical about love. Sometimes you just know, when watching something, that the perfect person has been cast in the role, and this is one of those times.
Colin Firth. Well, what can I say? I never paid much attention to him before hand (even when I briefly met him at the Toronto International Film Festival about three years ago). But, as Mr. Darcy, he makes me swoon (plus, in "Bridget Jones' Diary" I was too busy swooning over that cad, Hugh Grant, to notice him much). He's the ideal Mr. Darcy. And that scene where he gets out of the pond, dripping wet...good grief! lol.
The whole supporting cast was excellent as well. In fact, I don't have a single complaint. All of you must check it out at some point.
