sometimes I am a little too earnest.

I do believe that is one of my problems, if you'll pardon me for self-analysis here: I tend toward enthusiasm.  I was once described as "agressively friendly," but I believe that description came from a person who was somewhat uncertain of my sincerity.  I suspect some people may doubt my probity, seeking motive when there is none.  I am not implying that I act without design, but when I do, I am candid about it.  Self-interest is a powerful incentive (for example, I am seeking out your company because I seek and believe you may be particularly well-suited in that regard); I am not alone in being driven by need.  The misconception that it is necessary to conceal one's ultimate agenda is folly, and a conceit of the fearful and dishonest.  I do not pretend to fearlessness, or utter guilessness, but I try.  It wouldn't make sense to most people that being helpful and nice is actually fun for me, nor does that fact make me any less of an asshole, because I can sometimes be a real humdinger of an asshole.  I just sort of like people.  A lot.  I suppose if you're a person that, deep down inside doesn't like people, a sociopath at the core, then I am anathema to you.  I doubt that you are--you're funny.  Funny's a sign that you want others to laugh.  That seems pretty caring to me.

Of course there are VERY UNFUNNY PEOPLE who subject us to their abject absence of drollery, people utterly without compassion, willfully giving us glimpses into their drab, humorless lives.

Bob Saget is a prime example of these quip-deprived personality vampires, flitting on the shadowy fringes of urbanity, living off the heady ichor of our wit (my father is another; old fool hasn't made me laugh in thirty years).  We pretend not to acknowledge thier obvious handicap, of course, but is it really fair that we do?  Talk about a social promotion--they are (bless their little dreary little hearts) the convivial equivalent of an illiterate receiving a high school diploma, and you are not about to let that Einstein into Harvard now, are you?

These people are, in my opinion, motivated by malevolence most black and most foul.

letters, dad
