NAME: Trisana ‘Tris’ Chandler
CODENAME: None
SERIES/SOURCE: The Circle of Magic books
AGE: 14
GENDER: Female
ROLE: Student
BACKGROUND: Tris is the only child of a wealthy entrepreneur, Valden Chandler, and his wife Darra. Tris’s parents were distant, and as such Tris was left to her own devices a lot, and learned to entertain herself through reading and learning, without other people.
Her powers manifested young, but as she had repeatedly tested negative for an active X-gene, nobody realized why static electricity always hurt more when she was around, or why the ceiling sometimes dripped water down on them even when there weren’t cracks in it. This, combined with her decidedly solitary nature, led to Tris being shuffled from family member to family member for years and developing a lingering resentment and distrust towards most of her blood kin.
Finally, the latest family member to be landed with her got fed up and sent her to Stone Circle Temple in an attempt to reign in her gifts. Life was only slightly easier for Tris there, but luckily that only lasted a few months, before Tris was discovered by Niklaren ‘Niko’ Goldeye and brought to Winding Circle, where she met Sandry, Daja, Briar and Rosethorn.
Through a complicated set of circumstances involving an earthquake and magical thread, Tris’ magic became inextricably intertwined with that of the previously mentioned three, leaving them with both a closer familial relationship and a psychic bond with each other. After several accidents involving their newly complicated powers, the kids were sent to Xavier’s.
PERSONALITY: Tris is bookish and introverted. She doesn’t particularly care for the presence of other people, and she’ll get snippy if it’s imposed upon her too much. She’s sparse with kind words and rather critical. She’s fond of her foster-siblings and teachers, and she’ll grow to like people after a while, but she’ll still be somewhat irritable and grumpy around them. Honestly, it’s just her way. She likes animals quite a bit, and will in fact raise baby birds who have fallen out of their nests (IT’S CANON).
APPEARANCE: Short and somewhat dumpy, with curly red hair, grey eyes, and pale skin with a generous splattering of freckles. Tris tends towards plain, concealing clothes and she used to wear wire-rimmed spectacles, until one of her relatives bothered to give her contacts, which is my way of handwaving why none of my icons have glasses.
POWERS: Tris possesses ambient power with the weather and the earth. She can manipulate storms, rain, lightning, cyclones, volcanoes, earthquakes, water, etc., as well as accurately predict weather, sense and control currents such as those in magma and rivers, and scry on the wind. All of this is a lot of power for one girl, and Tris tends to be sparing in the application of her powers because they’ve caused her trouble in the past. She still can’t control most of it very well, so she sticks to the smaller stuff. If she ever were to use her full abilities, she would be RIDICULOUSLY powerful.
ANYTHING ELSE?: Not really, but she’ll likely get pissed if telepaths start poking around in her mind, so...heads up?
- RP SAMPLES
First-person sample: I’d much rather be at Living Circle. I still don’t know why we can’t stay at Discipline cottage. Yes, yes, I know we needed to clear out for students who needed it more than we did, but - that was the only home I've ever had that I actually liked. I doubt I'll like this Xavier Institute.
But then, I didn’t like Discipline at first either, so I should probably give it a fair chance. Niko says they’ve got some of the most practiced teachers the world over here and that they’ll teach me how to control my powers even better than I learned at Discipline.
He also mentioned their vast library, which lead me to believe that he knows me too well. I just hope the other students aren’t complete dimwits. At least my sister and brother are coming, too. Niko warned me that we’ll probably be in separate dorms, which makes sense, but still. Briar would say I’m grumpy about having to actually interact like a human for once. Briar is, of course, an idiot.
Third-person sample: Tris squashes herself further into the airplane chair, knees pulled up and long, thick skirt pulled down. She absently double-checks that her seatbelt is on right and adjusts her book in her lap, flipping it open to her earmarked page.
It only takes a few words for her to be sucked back into the text. All the talk of storm patterns and the wind structures framing them is a comforting, familiar thing. That’s nice, to have that little bit of home, right in her hands.
There’s a man sitting beside her who looks like he has assistants to do everything for him. He sniffs at her disdainfully and pointedly looks away. Tris glares at him from behind her book and static starts to lift her hair. Hey, coppercurls, keep a lid on it. No electrocuting anything while the plane is in flight, it’s right here in the rules.
Tris rolls her eyes. Easy for you to say, Briar, you get to sit with Sandry and Daja. I’m stuck with Lord Stuckup over here. Briar snorts aloud, and Sandry rolls her eyes.
Daja tells her, It’s okay, Tris. We’ll be there soon.
