A sweet start to summer: June

Jul 13, 2021 11:30

And we are here! Can you believe it! The first live race of many to come since October 2020.
This year I signed up for the summer sunrise watermelon series with little to no expectations aside from finishing due to my abysmal virtual times. Turns out running with people does make a difference after all!

This year there were changes from 2019 weather they were pandemic dictated or just logistical.

To start, bib pickup was at the clubhouse of the local golf course instead of the running store which was fine once you knew where to go. Next instead of a free for all there were staggered start corals which honestly I was in group 5 but saw people with higher numbered groups closer towards the front with their faster friends and family and nobody batted eyes so 🤷🏻‍♀️

There was a change to the course allowing for more road time at the finish instead of the last quarter mile or so on a grassy shoulder of the road.

And finally only a series medal in August, weather it’s at bib pick up with series shirts or as you cross the finish time will only tell.

Onto the race…OOTD was my blue & purple kohl’s outfit with my rainbow pastel bondi band.

The race started at 7 with needing to be corralled by 655. I cut it close as I was in the coral just pinning my bib on at 654 just as the faint sounds of the anthem could be heard (as mentioned I was in the last coral and I had to walk back far to my coral marker.

I checked the weather 75 feels like 75 with 90% humidity

Once I was off I noted the “finish” when I was .26 miles out.

I reached mile 1 in 14:03 with a pace of 13’44 and was genuinely SHOCKED when I looked at my tracker. After all, I didn’t feel as if I was running harder or faster than normal…

At 1.17 we merged from the road to the lakes jogging trail {ps I walk/jogged said trail two days prior to the race pulling in a 5K time of 54:40 keep this in mind}

At 1.85 was the one water stop. When they said self serve stop I expected a bottle refill station {and had one bottle in hand I already stopped to sip three times and another bottle in my running belt} I was definitely surprised to see it was volunteers filling cups and the self serve me things take from a table instead of being handed cups!!!

Soon I reached mile 2 in 29:57 14’37 pace

I took another sip of my water before reaching the second merge back to the street at 2.98

I reached mile 3 at 3.06 46:04 15’00 pace

I crossed with a time of 47:22 which by default is my summer PR
Via fitbit my pace was 14’53 officially it was 15’14

I added “The Fit Life” project from run the edge as an extra motivation tool (though I can already tell I probably won’t be renewing my subscription even though there are 11 months to go LOL) that said my achievments

HUGE UPDATE on RunDisney and Gasparilla this month!!!

Wine and Dine is live though with pent up demand, no more AP/DVC presale pool, no more Travel Companies offering bibs as a package and potentially a smaller field it will be interesting to see if I get in to that 10K or marathon weekend’s 10K or whatever the inaugural spring surprise brings

I did it! I signed up for my first real half in February…. Hopefully I won’t flop
