There was one piece of advice John's grand-mere had given him and he'd always tried to live by: "You can lie to the marks, lie to your lovers, lie to whoever you need to, even lie to me all you want. But never lie to yourself. You can't make the mark dance to your tune unless you know what song you're playing."
So, when he'd decided that the best idea to secure his safety on the crew of The Walrus was to seduce Captain Flint, John wanted to make sure it was for the reason he told himself it was.
