I want to try and keep track of what/how many new-to-me movies I see this year. I've done things similar before, but not entirely.
Movies so far:
1. The Revenant--Gorgeous, powerful, amazing performances. Not for those who can't see animals being hurt. I think
feochadn nailed it when she said it was Terrence Malick meets Sam Peckinaph, too.
2. The Hallow--Irish pastoral horror movie about a biologist and his family living on the edge of a forest when Strange Things Begin to Happen. Good special effects, and I liked the characters. I also liked that, from a neutral third party perspective, the Vaguely Threatening Local Giving Dire Warnings to Get Out seems genuinely concerned for them rather than just threatening. I get why the family doesn't listen--when Strange Things Begin to Happen, you're much more likely to suspect that it's cranky townsfolk than the Sidhe getting up in your business--but I also kind of felt sorry for the dude really just worried about the couple and their baby.
3. Brooklyn--Yes, we've been doing some last minute pre-awards movie-watching. Quiet, sweet little movie about Eilis, a young woman from a small town in Ireland who is sponsored to go to America in 1952. I'm used to films--especially period British films--where Something Horrible Happens, and while it's not without it's human problems, it's not that. I really did have this moment after the movie where I said, "Hey, no actual nor threat of sexual assault in this movie!" For awards, it's got lovely production design and costuming.

Photo for today:
This is from underneath Lanercost Priory, which is near the eastern end of Hadrian's Wall. It was considered a Royal Residence, since Edward I convalesced there for about 5 months just before his last battle.
I also have some fondness for the site, as the ladies who volunteered in the gift shop and their friend who stopped by for a chat while we were there were a hoot.
