I have so many thoughts about Daredevil and Age of Ultron, and I'm leaving in a week for Ireland and GB.
Except, instead, I'm going to talk about Vikings.
Every time I think this show is done raising the slashy bar with regards to Athelstan and Ragnar (especially now that Athelstan is dead), it goes and gives me something like THIS.
I think it's beyond slashy at this point. This is slash. Ragnar asking to be baptized so he can be reunited with Athelstan in the afterlife--and not with his daughter, sons, wives, etc.--wow. Not where I expected it to go.
And even before that, him reaching towards glowy!Athelstan coming towards him and the Jesus v Odin imagery and...yowza.
Ragnar is obviously dying--bleeding out of both ends is never a good sign, and he's been rough for a while--which makes me wonder how they will make this mesh with Ragnar's death in the sagas, which they'd already alluded to previously. (Hint: Doesn't happen in Paris.) I also just don't want him to die before meeting Ecbert one last time.
Speaking of King Handsy of Groptonia, he just upped the creepy level, too. Not that I find him wanting to make Judith his mistress surprising--I'm more surprised he hadn't tried something before this. And I did love her cutting through his bullshit to get to the point: We're doing this, and you'll protect Alfred, right? Okay, let's go.
The whole thing with the missionary back in Kattegat was an interesting juxtaposition. I especially liked the ideal-religious-fantasy moment, which I thought briefly might be real: again, stories of people of faith from all religions holding hot pokers, etc. And, hey, I thought he might have some whale grease on his hands or something. But interposed with the reality, yeah. More likely. And Aslaug's casual "kill him" as she tucks her kids into bed makes total sense, too. Maybe Athelstan would have become a proselytizer if he'd lived long enough after his "rebirth," but I don't know that I believe he'd be swinging the "false gods" ax around with these people he'd lived so long with. If he did, he would have ended the same way.
Next week's finale previews just made me squeal. So glad I'll get to see it before I'm away for two weeks!
