Nice way to start the day

Jun 26, 2013 09:56

I'm just coming out of a work-related avalanche long enough to breathe, and find many things to celebrate:

* First and foremost, of course, DOMA and Prop 8 struck down by the US Supreme Court. I can't explain how high I feel today.

As an aside, as a human, I feel sorry today for anyone whose marriage is so shaky, it feels threatened by other people's marriages.

As a theist to other theists, I feel sorry for anyone whose capacity for love and compassion is so limited and narrow, that they can't even imagine God is capable of anything greater than what they possess.

As a citizen of this country, I'm glad that today, their voices and need to control others' lives did not prevail over reason and the law.

* I sometimes despair of the pervasiveness and immediacy of "news" and mass communication over any form of self-reflection or restraint. That said, this would not have been possible without the immediacy and watchful eyes of those present and the internet. It's a lot harder to re-write the rules/history (even a history of 2 minutes) when everyone is watching.

In much less earth-shattering, but still yay news:

* BLACKHAWKS! That was an amazing game and series, and I'm genuinely surprised it didn't go the full 7, they were so evenly matched. I also have to say, as much as I dislike the Bruins and their "style," the number of injuries on both teams being reported I am filled with both admiration and the usual amount of "pro athletes are insane" for them and the Blackhawks.

But the 'Hawks get to cuddle with the Cup for the summer, so yay. :-)

* I can't believe the Canucks and Rangers just traded coaches. This is definitely going to be an interesting coming season. If we actually get the Coyotes in Seattle in the fall (decision next week), I don't know how I'm going to have time to do ANYTHING come October.

* Not going to do a long links post today--possibly tomorrow--but I wanted to mention that the Criterion Collection has announced that all of its Merchant and Ivory Collection is going out of print. Criterion will be selling the BluRays and DVDs only through the end of this month, so everyone else is "while supplies last." Since I've been meaning to get the Criterion for Maurice, now is probably the time.

* I've been catching up on movies recently. I finally saw Lincoln, and Tommy Lee Jones was just as amazing as expected. Everyone in the movie was, really. I also finally got to listen to the commentary track of Cabin in the Woods, which was hilarious and insightful, as expected.

The only disappointment I've had recently, was A Good Day to Die Hard. Now, I'm a Die Hard fan, I enjoy the movies and their interpretation of physics. But, wow, that was just bad. Horrible dialog, the movie is mostly about Jack, and I can't say I liked Jack all that much, and so much more. Mostly, I didn't like JOHN much in this.

*sigh*

* How is Hannibal over for the season? HOW?! Honestly, I think it was all the more powerful and well done for only being 13 episodes, and I'm kind of hoping that they keep it for next season. I just hate waiting.

+ In some ways, I like that they ended the season with Will finally understanding and being aware of what was going on and who Hannibal really is. Yes, he's in prison, but I think I would have been far more upset if they had ended it with him still semi-delusional and thinking Hannibal was on his side. I'm guessing a large portion of next season will be him trying to convince others that Hannibal is not the benevolent individual he seems and Will himself is not a serial killer, but that's next season.

+ Hannibal-as-the-horned-one: AWESOME. That was some amazing make-up/sfx/filming through all of those sequences.

+ I now, more than ever, want to know Dr. De Maurier's story. I was glad to finally get confirmation that she knows what Hannibal is, which makes me wonder if that is part of Hannibal's game with her: seeing how much she can actually figure out about him.

I do now wonder if she actually suspects what she's really eating.

+ Jack: I am frustrated and angry with Jack, but it seems consistent with who he is. His approach to everything is, and must be, based on the evidence, even while he is willing to work leads provided by others' intuition; in the face of such overwhelming evidence--and I believe his own latent guilt for what he sees as his pushing of Will towards a breakdown--the only logical, simple answer is that Will had committed these crimes. And, as I was saying to someone, it's the 'hear hoof beats, think horses, not zebras' reasoning: it's much simpler and more obvious that odd-and-slightly-unbalanced-losing-time-Will committed these murders when all the physical and anecdotal evidence is pointed at him than Hannibal or anyone else "setting him up."

I mentioned a while ago (I'm not sure if here or just in some ftf discussions), too, the realization that Jack is someone who works with mentally ill people--the criminally insane--but has no idea what mental illness is or how it works. Like a number of people, he has an on-off view of it: there's the sane and the insane (usually criminal) and anything in between is just a "pull yourself together, man!" situation. I think that's how Will got so far gone without him doing something, aside from the fact that Will was still being "useful."

+ I really need to marathon this whole season this summer. There's so much I know I missed.

* Have not seen this week's Teen Wolf yet. *bounce*

More later.
