“Trick or treat!” a round of voices chorused as Clark opened the door. He smiled, holding out a large bucket of candy to them. The kids grabbed their treats and ran back down the front porch steps, headed for the next house.
“Connor! Chloe!” Clark called up the stairs. “When are you going to be ready?”
Chloe appeared on the landing and smiled down at him. “He’ll be down in a minute,” she said as she started down the stairs.
Clark sighed. When Connor and Chloe had gotten back from the costume store, he had been expressly forbidden from peeking - first by Connor who ran the bag to his room as soon as they’d gotten home and then by Chloe who had warned him not to use his X-ray vision on it. It had become somewhat of a private joke between the two of them, and now, it seemed they were trying to torture him by delaying the debut of this oh-so-important costume.
Clark schooled his expression into what Chloe called his hurt puppy dog look and turned its full power on her. “You’re killing me here, Chlo.”
It seemed she had become immune to that face though since she only laughed at him. “Oh, you’re fine. He’ll be down any second anyway.”
Clark pulled her into his embrace. “You’re mean.”
“But you love me anyway.”
“I do love you.”
She turned in his arms, smiling up at him, and he kissed her. Sometimes he wondered what would’ve happened if he and Chloe hadn’t found their way to each other, but he couldn’t quite picture it. Besides, Clark knew he wouldn’t have it any other way.
“Ready?” Connor’s voice called from the top of the stairs.
“He’s ready, Connor,” Chloe called back. “I know you’ll love it,” she said to Clark, and the way she grinned at him made him think he should maybe be worried about this costume. Connor hadn’t wanted to be a fairy princess, had he?
Connor came bounding down the stairs, and at first, all Clark could see was green. For one sickening moment, he was sure his son was going to be dressed in a Tinkerbell outfit, but Clark blinked, his eyes adjusted, and what he saw was one hundred times worse than anything he’d expected.
An arrow came flying through the air toward him and Chloe, and Clark caught it automatically, still staring dumbfounded at Connor.
He looked to Chloe, who was grinning eagerly, then back to Connor, again to Chloe, and finally back to Connor again.
For Halloween this year, the son of Superman, last son of Krypton, was going as… the Green Arrow. Clark had no idea how this had happened.
“Do you like it?” Connor asked eagerly. Clark just kept staring until Chloe nudged him gently with her elbow.
“Huh?” He blinked over at her, and Chloe tilted her head, eyebrows raised, toward Connor.
“Oh,” Clark said. “Yeah, of course. It’s very…” He cast about for a suitable word. “Realistic.”
He heard a scoffing noise from Chloe’s direction, and when he turned to look at her, she just rolled her eyes at him.
Connor seemed satisfied with his dad’s answer, or maybe he was just excited. Nevertheless, he bounced up to his dad, chattering excitedly about his costume the whole time.
The doorbell rang, and Chloe went to answer it this time, sensing her husband’s ability to perform even simple tasks was comprised at this time. She pulled the door open to reveal the Queen family - Lois, Oliver, and their four-year-old daughter Laura, who was currently clinging to her father’s left leg.
“Connor,” Chloe called back inside. “Your Aunt Lois and Uncle Oliver are here.” She motioned them inside and shut the door behind them.
“He’s showing Clark his Halloween costume,” she explained, barely contained glee written clearly across her face.
“And how did Smallville take that?” Lois asked.
Chloe laughed. “I think he’s still getting over the shock.”
Connor rounded the corner then, calling, “Uncle Ollie!”
“Hey there, little man,” Oliver said. “Looking good. Almost as handsome as the real Green Arrow.”
Lois smacked him on the arm, and Oliver gave her a little shrug. Connor, however, was indignant.
“I am the real Green Arrow,” he insisted.
“You are, huh?”
Connor nodded vigorously, and Laura, intrigued, finally unfurled herself from her father’s side.
“I’ll prove it,” Connor said, and he ran back around the corner. A moment later, an arrow came flying from that direction, falling several feet short of Oliver and Laura.
Nonetheless, Oliver groaned and clutched at his stomach as Connor came back around the corner.
“You got me,” Oliver said. “You must really be the Green Arrow.”
Laura made a sound of distress and darted out to pick up the arrow. “Don’t worry, Daddy,” she said. “I saved you.”
Chloe took one look at Laura’s costume and burst out laughing again. “Oh, Lois, you didn’t.”
Lois shrugged. “It’s what she wanted.”
“Well, maybe Clark will appreciate that at least.”
“Appreciate what?” Clark asked as he finally emerged from the living room, coming to stand by Chloe’s side.
Chloe nodded toward the little girl who was now embroiled in a bitter fight with Connor over whether Oliver was actually dead or not. Laura was dressed in a Supergirl outfit - red cape, boots, and all.
“At least somebody in this family recognizes the importance of Kryptonian superheroes,” Clark muttered.
Chloe rolled her eyes at him again. “Poor baby.”
Suddenly, there was a loud thudding noise, and Laura burst into tears, drawing the attention of the adults.
“Connor Jonathan Kent,” Chloe admonished while Oliver went to console his daughter. Connor at least had the decency to look sheepish.
“She started it,” he mumbled.
“I don’t care. You’re older than she is. Now, apologize.”
“I’m sorry,” Connor said in the direction of the floor.
Chloe was about to demand a proper apology when Lois interrupted, “Well, we’d better get these two out of here before they can cause any more trouble. Come on Connor, Ollie. See you later, Chlo.”
“Bye, Lois,” Chloe said, and as Oliver headed out the door, Laura in his arms, she said goodbye to them too.
Connor snuck out before she could say anything to him, but she called down the driveway, “Be good, Connor.” She got a wave in response. Once Lois, Oliver, Laura, and Connor were out of sight, she closed the door.
“How could you, Chloe?” Clark asked as soon as the door was closed, and when Chloe looked at him, his expression was absolutely downtrodden. She just managed to hold back a smirk.
“He’s six, Clark. He wanted to be the Green Arrow. I just bought him the costume.”
“But he’s half-Kryptonian.” Clark’s tone was dangerously close to whining. “If he was going to be any superhero, it should’ve been Superman.”
“That’s not because you’re biased or anything though, right?” Chloe said as she started for the living room. Clark followed.
“Of course not,” he said rather indignantly, not unlike Connor earlier. Sometimes they were so much alike that it scared Chloe a little.
Chloe ignored him. “Besides, he doesn’t know he’s part Kryptonian, does he?”
“Still,” Clark said, “Green Arrow?”
Chloe grinned and settled onto the couch, Clark beside her. “If I didn’t know better, I’d say you were jealous.”
“Of Oliver?” Clark scoffed. “No. He has to put up with Lois all the time.”
Chloe shot him a look. They often had talks about Lois. She was family, and Chloe didn’t like him constantly belittling her.
“Besides,” Clark continued, “he doesn’t have you and Connor. What more could I ask for?”
Chloe held the look for a moment longer before breaking into a wide grin. “Good answer. Sweet. A little corny but still sweet.”
“I aim to please,” Clark said, pulling her to him. “I have to remind you which superhero runs this household after all.”
“Hmm…” Chloe pretended to think for a moment. “Green Arrow?”
Clark kissed her to shut her up.
