I made this dish, Chicken Tagine with Lemons & Olives, for dinner tonight, with a couple of modifications. Neither of us likes turmeric, so I left it out and added saffron (one of my favorite spices) to the cooking liquid instead. I also left out the olives because I didn't have any. Ate it with green beans and couscous. It was: so fabulous. Hubby even liked the couscous when it was drenched with the sauce.

Can anyone tell me why the Department of Agriculture waited three weeks to recall the ground beef in the latest recall? Apparently, they found E. coli in a sample of ground beef on October 8, and only yesterday recalled the meat, which had a sell-by date through October 29.

We bought a seven-pound pack of that beef at Wegmans last week and ate three meals' worth of it (two meals of chili mac, one of meatloaf); the rest was turned into mini meatloaves and frozen for future meals.

It's just not comforting to think that they knew there was a problem three weeks ago, but they didn't do anything about it until nearly a week past the sell-by date - well after most of the meat had undoubtedly already been eaten.

Thanks, USDA. I feel so confident knowing you're overseeing the production of my family's food.
