Idk what else to call this so this will be a series of things I'm going to post about Deadpool for the hell of it. Plus it's a good excuse to re-read comics and dick around. :)
ANYWAY. #1 as the title says, is how Deadpool got over his his body/mask issues. More importantly, how he went from this:
Going insane when he lost his mask and calling it his face
To this:
Being totally cool hanging out without his mask and not caring when it gets pulled off or destroyed.
Like the first panel shows, Deadpool used to
freak the hell out when he lost his mask. He'd use anything from womens clothing to boxes and garbage to cover himself when he lost it. Which was funny and sad all at the same time. Even Teresa, who Deadpool LOVES, couldn't get him to really take off his mask for long. How'd he get over such a crippling fear and psychosis?
Three things. At first: Image inducer. Second: A weird ass curse. By the end: A little mutant kid.
Deadpool's holographic image inducer was a piece of tech that he got from Weasel that put a nice little holographic layer that made him look like whoever he wanted. His voice was still the same so he wouldn't be able to pull off any sort of major deception for long, but he liked being able to run around without worrying about anyone saying anything. Also he could get away with pretty much anything he wanted by
changing faces. Oh and so he can
mack with girls without scaring them off. :) However, the image inducer was just a crutch.
Then, Deadpool started LOVING his scars when he was hit with a curse that made him look like a movie star for a while Thom Cruz!!! Man don't even ask..
This pages sums up how he stopped hating his scars and no longer would mind loosing his mask. But what about the image inducer?
Well, what finally got him out of using it was an ugly mutant kid that Deadpool met while he was taking a job. The kid's dad was being threatened by his neighboring business rival with exposing his poor ugly kid as a mutant. I keep mentioning the kid was ugly. It's a big deal. How ugly of a kid? Well...
Yeah, that bad. But Deadpool is ugly as hell too, so he gets it. Also explains the kid's mutant power if you're interested
ADORABLE. Anyway, this next panel doesn't have to do with Deadpool's issues, but it shows that he HATES WHEN PEOPLE MESS WITH KIDS. He may kill for money, but don't pick on kids, man. Especially not ugly kids Deadpool likes.
Back on topic, the next bit happens after the job. Deadpool is trying to talk the kid into going to Xaiver's school for mutants. It does not go as planned.
Ouch.OOOH LOOK AT THAT FORESHADOWING And how Deadpool reacts?
Yup. Bye-bye image inducer indeed. Now, he goes out without the mask in public. He wears a hat but that's sensible and it's amazing how far he's come from his first appearances.
And that's it. From psychosis to fairly normal, Deadpool's come a long way with his body image even if he still kinda thinks he's ugly and all and now he could really care less.
Next time, I think I'll talk about Vanessa Carlysle AKA Copycat. From love to hate and everything in between.
