This makes SO much sense to me, because recently I've trained myself to:
Put my keys on the hook by the door every time I come home Put away groceries BEFORE checking my email or doing anything else Do the dishes before I go to bed at night
And these ridiculous little things are enough to start changing how I see myself, and give me some energy to find the next thing I can change.
It made sense to me for the same reasons. I'm trying to train myself to do all these small things automatically, so that I don't have to think about them. It's a process, but like you said, it gives me energy to look for the next thing I can change too.
I just came across an article that seems to take a similar attitude (haven't read all of it yet, though - and be warned, I think it's from a bro-oriented fitness blog...)
The author actually quotes a researcher who crops up a lot in Pychyl's podcasts, so yeah, that about sums it up. The article and the podcast(s) on willpower draw heavily from Baumeister's research.
