Better Late Than Never, yes?

Took Sergent up to fearsclave's new digs last weekend. I am seriously jealous of the town: it's kind of like a winterised Eureka. The drive up was a little longer than I bargained for, and I kind of tweaked my back sitting for that long. The dog slept the whole way, and even put up gracefully with the harness I put on him to keep him buckled in the back seat. He is a Good Dog™.

Spent the weekend eating (mostly) Paleo, which was delicious all around, and seriously went a long way to making me want to take it up myself more seriously. :) We got caught up, I got a tour of the (gorgeous) house, and the dogs made friends. Sergent spent most of the weekend following me around, clearly feeling a little insecure after the drive (the last time he got in a car he got left behind, after all), so I didn't really begrudge him the separation anxiety.

Saturday we went snowshoeing. I was going to let Sergent off-leash, but I think he's actually never been for extended walks in the woods (confirmed by a later email from his former owner) and he got really overexcited and took off in the wrong direction so fast I couldn't keep up at all until he was gone far out of sight. So once I retrieved him he went back on the leash, along with some extra slack provided by rope that Carolyn had brought with her.

Once he got used to being back on the leash, though, he was good as gold and trotted directly ahead of me on the path the entire 3+ hours we were out there. He was in doggie heaven, smelling all the smells and claiming the entire forest as his.

When we got back he promptly lapsed into a coma and slept for most of the rest of the evening.

The next day we went ice fishing along with two local LMI-families. I believe at least two of them are on LJ, but I forget their names. Anyway, it was a great time. I bought myself a jigging rod, which was a lot less expensive than I originally thought it would be, along with some 8lb-test line.

Alas, we caught no fish, but that didn't matter at all to the dog, who raced around the wide open lake and cavorted and generally had a grand old time. Next time we'll go further out or maybe closer to the marina where there are more fish to be had.

This time around, the dog responded really well to being off-leash, probably because the flat, open lake reminded him more of the small dog park where I take him for runs. He ranged fairly far and wide, but circled and crossed back and forth through our little group, trying to sneak trail mix from the kids who were with us, and overall having a fantastic time.

The husky breeding really came through here. Apparently my dog is a big fan of lying in the snow.

And then, just before we were to leave, the dog decided to make himself at home. Not entirely sure why, since it's not his habit to jump on beds (or it wasn't before, anyway).

The weekend went by in a blur, and I was sorry it was over so soon. But, alas, all good things come to an end.
