Knuckles seemed to freeze in place.

He was looking at the pair with a stony face, expression betraying nothing but hatred. His body language told a different story entirely; there was something about the stiffness in his posture that was dangerous.

Mighty, however, was struggling admirably for someone in his state. He writhed, even tried to grasp the robot. But Metal held him firmly, hand around his throat tight, eyes locked with the Guardian.

The brief silence felt like an eternity. The pathetic remains of the army had stopped moving, as had the echidna.

”I will kill him,” Metal assured the echidna, digging his claws into the armadillo’s neck slightly.

Knuckles’s mouth curled into a snarl; his hands were clenched into fists, resting tensely against his sides.

Julie-su held up her arms.

”We surrender.”

Anashi shot a sharp glare at her.

“Speak for yourself.”

She sent him a scandalized look.

”You’re just going to let him die?!” she demanded, “Isn’t he your friend?”

”Don’t interfere in matters that don’t concern you, woman,” he growled, shifting his cold, furious eyes on her. Julie-su would not be cowed so easily.

”He’ll die! Don’t you care about him at all?!”

”What did I just tell you?” his voice became lower, more menacing. Metal was watching them thoughtfully. He squeezed Michael’s chest, causing him to gasp in pain. They stopped only for a moment to regard the armadillo.

”Surrender!” Julie hissed.

”Don’t tell me what to do!”

Metal’s claws dug into the armadillos side, cutting it open. Blood dripped onto the snow below them.

”He’s your friend! What’s wrong with you?!”

Knuckles was alternating between glaring at her and glaring at Metal.

”You’re heartless!” she continued, furious now, “How can you call yourself a Guardian when you let your friends-“

With amazing speed, Knuckles grabbed her by the shoulders, pulling her close. She choked on her last word, instead emitting a startled sound. He looked ready to kill her - she was nearly nose-to-nose with him and she could not find her voice. His grip was uncomfortably tight - even painful, but it was his eyes that she had noticed. He had not been very expressive with emotions before, but his rage was clear now - and there was something else in his gaze, something that frightened her. For a moment, she was certain that she was going to die - one moment - but then Metal spoke and the illusion shattered.

”I grow weary of waiting,” the metallix unit said flatly, “You have to the count of three to surrender. Three…”

Julie-su was silent, her gaze was pleading, and even frightened. She was vaguely aware of him releasing her, acutely aware of the armadillo’s pain and mortality when Metal gave his throat a squeeze.

”Two…”

There was a moment in which Metal thought he would not give in - that he would attack, leave his friend to die. The Guardian’s posture changed; there was a tiny movement; something seemed to come loose. And then, with a glare cold enough to rival the temperature, the echidna held up his hands.

”I surrender.”

I just finished part 2/3 of Chapter 3 of AC, so I thought I'd provide a teaser. I have another teaser, Tails-centric, for anyone interested. (Let me know if you are) Also, yes, that is Julie-su (I don't like her), no, this is not Archie, and yes, Julie-su is only a minor character. I never intended for her to be in KatC in the first place, but she kind of wormed her way in. She has a purpose, though. Chapter 3 is currently 13,000 words. :O

Enjoy. And feedback pretty please.
