Faith of our Fathers

Prompt: Faith ( The Table of 15)
Subject: Elizabeth Weir

Faith of our fathers, whose almighty hand
Leads forth in beauty all the starry band
Of shining worlds, in splendor though the skies
Our grateful songs, before thy throne arise

Elizabeth had never understood her mother's beliefs. One all powerful, benevolent god, asking only for trust in his perfection in return for life eternal. She had gone to Sunday School, attended church in her little red dress like a good little girl, but to her, nothing ever fit. How could there be an all-powerful being who only wanted to help others but nothing for himself? Perhaps, somewhere, there was something, but after a long day at the UN, when Elizabeth went home and rubbed her temples, or when she had to send yet another message to Stargate Command for yet another dead officer, she couldn't believe that. This world was ruled by people, by souls, by people with flaws, people with both good and evil, people whose love was enveloped by anger and whose passion was fueled by hate. Even the Ancients were flawed- they were human once too, and human nature does not leave you when you ascend to a higher plane of existence.
Now, as the leader of the Atlantis Expedition, she had people working under her of all faiths, people who put their unmovable trust in something that could not be proved. She didn't understand, preferring tangible things, human emotions, things that were known and felt and seen.
But here, here in the Pegasus Galaxy, here in the lost city of Atlantis, here in a mystery, in a myth, she was starting to have some faith in the imposable.
