I probably posted several months ago that the contract I'm working under was up for re-competition. It was supposed to be awarded back in September, but because government sucks, they just got around to it this week. I've been working under bridge contracts since September. Anyway, my company, SAIC, did not win the contract. Instead, it's going to Lockheed Martin. This is not particularly problematic because the typical practice in this situation is for the new company to hire most of the staff from the outgoing company. So even though I'm officially being laid off from SAIC as of 3/31, I expect to be offered a job by Lockheed Martin.
SAIC actually had two contracts where I am. The operations contract which I'm on, and the development contract. They won the development contract. In a coincidence of timing, my coworker Tim (who used to be a fellow DBA but went to development a couple of years ago) put in his two weeks notice. Some of Tim's responsibilities have been given to another developer, and my boss wants me to step into Tim's position as a database developer. I met today with my boss and two of the top developers, and they all agreed that it's a good idea.
I'm also excited about the possibility. The job will start out as purely database-driven and transition into more general development. I would relish the opportunity to update my programming skills. Plus, I like the idea of actually producing something. In my current job, I spend almost all my time maintaining the status quo. It is very unsatisfying. I think programming could actually give me a sense of accomplishment.
The only catch is money. My boss isn't sure right now if he can justify paying me what I'm currently making. He might have to offer me less. He'll find out next week.
But if the money's there -- and I hope it is -- I'm taking that job.
