The orthopedic docs had good news today: No need for surgery. They'd sort of like to put a steel pin in the fifth carpal bone of my left hand just, you know, for fun, but no. They said it would heal straighter that way, and I told them I've never been much of a perfectionist where my body's concerned. So they set the bone (ow), and gave me a new fiberglass cast I get to wear for a month. Oh well, at least this one's a little shorter and lighter than the one I got in the ER, and only covers two fingers instead of three.
And the knee will heal, I just have to keep the brace on for a month. I'm going in Friday so they can do an MRI to get a better look at the tendon damage, but he said at this point it looks like it should eventually heal up pretty well on its own. I'm supposed to keep off it for the most part until I go in to get it re-checked in a week, but I do now have permission to hobble around the house, as long as I use my cane and the splint.
From here I can look out into my dining room and see the candle that burns on the altar there for Moon Dog. I said my good-byes to him tonight. There really wasn't much to say but thanks, and bon voyage. I believe he's off to rejoin the Whole, and will know all the things I can't put into words.
I do not like the idea of not being able to drum for a month. Tomorrow I start practicing with the klawn yaw, a drum played exclusively with the right hand.
Yesterday I was feeling sorry for myself because I can't go to the monthly Hiawatha drum jam on 10/2 because of my injuries.
Moon Dog can't go because he's dead.
The key to gratitude is keeping a proper sense of perspective.
Paid a couple guys $300 today to repair the damage caused by the police kicking in my door on Saturday so the paramedics could get in. They really had to beat on it to get it down, and it was finally the hinges that gave way, not the lock. The three existing sets of hinges have been re-mounted in all new woodwork. I'd add a couple more sets just to reinforce it even more, but Sarah had a point in that I don't want to make it too secure, lest something similar should ever happen in the future. It would suck if the police, paramedics, or firefolk couldn't get in just because I'm a security nut.
