California

(written saturday)
So, I'm in California.....
I had this brilliant idea that I could just write out an entry on my computer and then post it later when I could get access to the internet so that's what I'm doing. Aren't I brilliant? I'm in the process of getting approval to put in a wireless router so that I can have internet in my "dorm room" but they said that that might take a week or so, so until then I won't be on very often. One computer for like 30 people is a bit hard...
So California is a pretty place. I really haven't seen much of it aside from the campus for Desert Sun Science Center, though. We've only be here for like 2 days but it feels like a super long time because we've been doing stuff ALL the time. Maybe it also has to do with the fact that I have no internet access because I am SUCH a computer addict. Hahaha.
But yeah, training's going ok. It's a bit overwhelming right now but it's only the second day. The hardest thing for me is all the meeting new people stuff, though. Because we all live together, it's kinda expected that everyone hangs out with each other right now so we get to know each other. Which is all well and good...I like to meet new people. But it tires me out a WHOLE lot and at night I keep finding myself missing those friendly faces to talk to that I know and that know me and I don't have to worry about starting out from scratch, ya know?
OH, guess what???? There ARE actually stars in the sky!!! I can see them here. Last night we went naked-eye star gazing in the lovely 25 degree weather and I got to see Orion and the North Star and Saturn and Mars and Sirius and the little dog (I forget what his name is..Presarius maybe?), and Gemini and Pegasus and Andromeda and well..I"m sure there were others but I forget. It was beautiful. We got to talk about the zodiac constellations, too, and see some of them. Tonight (in 20 minutes) we get to go use the telescopes to look at stuff which should be neat, but EXTREMELY cold again. I don't like the cold.
We did ropes course stuff yesterday and we get to do it again tomorrow. It's weird that when we do stuff like that I keep thinking about how I could use it at camp. Blah. I'm stuck. I can't get out of it, can I? Shine, if you read this, I called you tonight, but you weren't there.
Hmmmm...what else....At the moment there is only one other person living in my place of residence. I call it that because it's attached to the Dorm where the kids stay, so techically it is a dorm room. But it is more like an apartment. We each have our own rooms for now, although we might get a third person in here in which case one of us will have a roommate. The rooms are really big. I don't know what to do with all the space! for you camp people, my room is the size of the room in the stonehouse, maybe a little bigger. It has a rug and HUMONGOUS closets and stuff.
Hmmm...oh yeah! We got to play with hydrogen gas today. Pretty flames...yea! =) We did stuff with gases and atmosphere and we learned how to operate the blow-up planetariums and we got to play with creating our own Mars Landers, which is basically like the traditional Egg Drop scenario, but harder.
Well, I guess that's long enough for now. I DO have my phone here so if anyone needs me you can always call or text me. Ask someone for the phone # or email me and ask cuz I'm not silly enough to post THAT on this thing. I miss you all and I am TERRIBLY suffering from internet withdrawal.
Brian -- if you read this can you do me a really big favor? Can you tell the guys in the Specs (And Corey Hammer if you can and Craig and/or Linda, too if you can) that I'll try my best to get on to keep up with posting for the next two weeks but I won't be able to get on to chat or roleplay until at least a week and a half from now? please? thanks. =)
MMmmm..time to go out in the cold again. BRRR!!

Elevation Sickness

So I never thought before about the effects of elevation/altitude. I guess this is because the only time I ever remotely dealt with it was when we hiked Mt. Washington and such and that was only for a couple of days. But I think that I'm definitely feeling the effects of it here. We all are, actually. Everyone's out of breath everywhere and really tired and stuff. They said it'll take about a week to get over. And water really does take a lot longer to boil up here!!!! That's amazing to me. Yet another thing I never really stopped to think about. But we were doing that experiment where you heat water up in a soda can and then dump it upside down into cold water and the can gets crushed and the water i think took like ten minutes to boil for like an inch of water, if that!!! agh!!
An awesome thing about Idyllwild (whether due to the elevation, the coast, or whatever) are the stars. We got to play with the telescopes last night. It was soooooo beautiful! We saw Saturn and its rings, and the Orion Nebula and Andromeda galaxy and the Moon, which was absolutely beautiful, AND we learned how to work the Meade telescopes. They're really cool. We all felt like 5 year olds again running around playing and getting really excited when it was our turn to look. Hahaha.
And today we got to build rockets and launch them and look for micrometeorites in the ground around here. Some other people found some, but I didn't.

Oh yeah. I saw a shooting star last night. And today we talked about them in our class on micrometeorites. It made me think of that song.......and that, of course, made me miss camp and all camp people and my guitar and all that and I wanted to sing, except that we were in the middle of our class and that probably would have drawn a bit more attention than I wanted. But it's in my head and it makes me REALLY want to talk to some camp people online. So I think that I will skip watching Princess Bride tonight and go to the library in the hopes that no one else is there because they are all watching the movie so that I can steal the internet for long enough to actually talk to people I hope I hope I hope!!!

Oh yeah! It was warm today! When we were launching the rockets this morning, I actually took off my outermost layer for a while! I was walking around with JUST a tshirt, and a fleece and a hat on rather than a tshirt, a longsleeve shirt, a fleece AND my fleece jacket! It was exciting! But not it's night time and it's cold again. Blah to coldness.
