UGH JOB FAIR

Mar 24, 2009 12:11

My day was going fantastic until I got to school this morning. I got off a quiet bus and walked into the JOB FAIR OF DOOM. Apparently it's that time of year again. They took all my comfy chairs and study tables near my favorite outlets and put in a CAR and LOUD TEENAGERS and people waving flyers saying COME WORK FOR ME. UGH. SO I went ahead and ran to my class room and parked there to study. And now lunch time is here and there is nowhere to sit. So I did a very Guilfordian/Ashevillian thing. Found the power outlet farthest from the commotion and out of the main walk way and parked on the floor. SO THERE. I will have my ramen and internet and eat it too! Oh and we had a group excersise in public speaking today. >_>;; I hate group work. And it's colder than it was yesterday. And and and and and blegh.

Awesome thing happened yesterday though. I went to camp out in Panera until the costume shopped opened up so I could return a piece of clothing I had borrowed. This really pretty girl came in and sat at the table behind me and also started to type away. Not so unusual until I hear her talking to someone one the phone and overheard snippets like, "Well I sent in the jewelry designs yesterday...The interview at Harvard went really well...I talked to my second in command in Sri Lanka and they said everything is running smoothly..."

By this time I was intrigued but didn't want to interrupt her work. Some time later a middle-age woman dressed for business came in and walked over the the girl's table. They introduce themselves and the woman handed her resume to the girl! o_O Continuing to unashamedly eavesdrop the interview was conducted and I learned the girl's name was Rachel, she was a Fulbright scholar, graduated from Duke, moved to Sri Lanka and opened a small design factory. She has moved back to the states to open an office here in Greensboro and is looking for people to work for her. Mostly interns and one or two higher level management (like who she was interviewing). As I got up to leave I spoke to her and told her I was interested in her work and asked where the shop she was planning to open would be located. She said that it would be in the Quaker Village area near Guilford. I offered my services as a temp and as free publicity and someone who has vast connections at Guilford. She gave me her business card and I e-mailed her my information and she said that she may call on me if she needs information about the area. WOOT.

I was telling someone this story and he said, "Cat, how do you do that? I sit down in a restaurant and I hear a bimbo complaining to her boyfriend about how they aren't spending enough time together. You find smart people. GIVE ME YOUR SECRET."

Life validates my existence sometimes.

this is re-cock-ulous, i love guilford college, learning, g-tech, talking to strangers, smart comes in many forms, beware! self-esteem!
