you will learn to ignore what is festering beneath if you want me to hold on
and then there are those who will at long last fade from the scrutiny of your careworn, heavy heart; as they go you will observe through brimming eyes how they hover hesitantly for a mere half-second before flitting away like lost butterflies, without so much of an imprint remaining, without so much of a hint of a physical trace of the hurt from the splintering and the fracturing (but you meticulously made sure of this)
and you will softly sigh as you glance wistfully towards what was never yours and you will whisper reassuringly (belying your open disdain) (still undecided if it should be for your benefit or theirs) of course it was enough though it never was, or will be but oh, their departure will rend you for the absolute last time and soon you will not hurt and you shall cease your vain struggling and (open your eyes; don't look so scared now) i promise it will be so, so, so beautiful to watch
