Dining in New York

I often forget about making reservations -- I think it's just because I don't eat out enough so I forget other people do. My mom was visiting this past weekend and I tried to reserve a table for two at two nice restaurants in the Valley (one's local, the other a new Melting Pot). The earliest I could get for either was 8:45. Which I thought might be too late for mom (we ended up going at 4:15 and treating it as a late lunch).

I'm going to New York City to see my sister and do touristy crap in a couple weeks. I figured while I was there I'd see if we could go to Mario Batali's restaurant, since I'm reading "Heat," by a journalist who trained at the restaurant for a month. I figured 8 p.m. on a Tuesday night, even in New York, even at a famous restaurant, wouldn't be that crowded. Surely, I figured, two weeks in advance was more than enough time to make a reservation.

Er, not so much. I just called and the earliest they could seat a table of 4 would have been 10:15.

So now I need a somewhat less-famous restaurant to try to get reservations too.
