The Sunday Night Report

I'm sure, since most of the people who read my LJ probably already read drama_freak's as well, that most of you know I've been playing through a spooky game called "Amnesia: The Dark Descent" to sort of celebrate Halloween month. Well, I was hoping to finish the game off tonight but, it being a puzzle game, I got a bit stuck, so I didn't get that far into it. (That and I got freaked out by a persistent SOB monster chasing me around corners).

Regardless, my playthrough videos are being updated as I make them here!
The weekend was interesting. I was asked to DJ my boss's wedding reception on Saturday night. Friday night I spent helping put up decorations at the pub where the reception was being held. I hadn't helped put up Halloween decorations in a long time, so that was cute little blast from the past.

The night of the reception things were pleasant enough. The reception boiled down to pretty much nothing but a big Halloween costumed dinner. Lots of witches and catwomen and vampire teeth, naturally. The winner, by far, of the costume contest had to be my coworker Jeff who threw together a rather impressive General Grievious costume. I've seen my share of convention costumes and even I was impressed when he showed up and started boogying down in the thing!

As for me, I got to play some loud music which was fun and all, but to be honest the turn out wasn't really spectacular so it wasn't like I could really get into the spirit of being up at the front with the microphone. Oh well.

Work continues to be busy these days, though I had an interesting meeting with my boss Erik last week. It seems that much of my recent success and the rewards that have been given to me as a result have had a darker side to them. It's not one that affects me that much, but nevertheless, Erik made me aware that it could very well affect some of the guys I've been working with for the last few years.

The long and short of it is that the higher ups have decided it's time to really start coming down hard on the department I work in with regards to learning and being able to properly use the computer editing equipment. Essentially, they've taken the "pirate code" approach of leaving behind any one who ends up falling behind. So some of the older staff members might be let go before too long.

Now I've been assured that this has little to do with me, as I am currently the most proficient staff member in the department. I've also been assured that my training seminars and manuals that I have written are all in perfect order and that I've made every effort to supply the staff with the tools they need to learn and understand the equipment to a degree the bosses will be satisfied with.

Still...

I must confess that maybe I haven't been hardened enough by supervisory duties, but I can't help but feel sorry for a few of the guys I've been working with since I started at MIJO. None of them have had the benefit of three years of education in a college setting as well as several years of informal practice to get them to the proficiency level that I'm at. I can only imagine what trying to learn all this stuff from scratch while in the midst of everyday life in the big city must be like.

Deep down, there's something else too. What if this is a sign of what's in store for me twenty years down the line? I'm sure back when I was just a toddler, some of these guys were the rock stars of the industry, just like I am now. I mean... is that all you get? Ten or fifteen years before some flashy new technology comes along that only the present day college grads can handle, and then you get a handshake and they send you on your way?

Gah, now I remember why I try not to think too much about "big picture" crap like this. I've already got the Sunday night lonelies hanging over me like a cold, wet towel. This doesn't help.

I think I'll throw a zombie movie on my computer and fall asleep now.

Happy Halloween everyone!
