He tried to laugh it off. "You're joking, right?"
Saguru just continued to stare up at him, waiting.
Kaito tossed his hands into the air. "It's not like there's a switch that flips me from Kuroba Kaito to Kuroba Arsène!" he exclaimed in exasperation. "It's a split in personality as a result of trauma--trauma, you hear? It wasn't really a choice!"
The blond frowned at him. "Some part of you chose to break away from the other, regardless the circumstances." He held up a hand to stave off any arguments against his words. "I am merely trying to get a better understanding of the situation. Having helped you when you didn't know what was going on, I think I'm entitled to some answers in order to make sure your other self is as he seems to like to portray himself.'
Kaito couldn't help but to give him an odd look. "Why the hell are you so comfortable with all of this?" he demanded before gesturing broadly as he continued, "This whole thing bothers me more than you and I find that somewhat unfair--"
"Well," interrupted Saguru dryly, crossing his arms and raising his eyebrows, "it helps somewhat that I already think of you as two people."
"... heh?"
The detective couldn't help but to smile a bit at the clueless response. "There is the you as a student, an innocent civilian, and there is the you as Kaitou Kid, an internationally wanted thief--"
Said thief did not appear amused. "Oi, genius, I'm still awake and aware when I'm Kid--"
"Which makes me think that the guise of Kid is actually the link between your two personalities." Saguru put a hand to his chin, narrowing his eyes as he considered his words. "Maybe there is something to that. Something inside, an instinct, perhaps, that was merely borrowed when acting as Kid came forefront during this trauma--"
"Not a bad theory, tantei-san," said a voice from Saguru's left, making him freeze for a moment until the voice continued, "It would make sense, actually, considering I only really know how to conduct a heist."
Closing his eyes while lowering his hand, Saguru took a deep breath before turning to face the only other person in the room. "Arsène, I presume?"
The other personality didn't respond and just watched him with a sharp eye that Saguru recognized as the more intense gaze of Kaitou Kid.
He wiped his slick palms against his trousers before standing up. He then held out a hand as he proceeded to properly greet the other side of Kuroba Kaito, "Well, it certainly is an honor--"
"Do you honestly think I'll shake your hand?"
Saguru stopped at that, lowering his hand slowly. "If you think I'm attempting to distract you from an attempt to arrest you, I assure you that you are mistaken--"
"Then put your hands in the air."
The detective stood there, stunned. "Are you seriously--"
"Tantei-san," said Arsène lightly, acting as though he weren't turning the world onto its ear as he gave a bit of a predatory smile, "do you want me to trust you or not? I know Kaito does, but even still, I don't trust you as far as I could throw you. Let's not forget your role in all of this, despite how you may be tossing it aside in favor of another."
Wanting to question the other personality's words more but knowing that Arsène was more than just impatient, Saguru silently did as told and rose his hands up and away from his body, feeling somewhat foolish. Wasn't the situation supposed to go the other way? But Arsène didn't seem to care how things were supposed to go and slowly moved to stand in front of Saguru, watching him intently and critically in a way that made the detective's blood run cold.
Arsène saw him as a threat, both to Kaito and to himself.
Hands were suddenly placed on either side of Saguru's torso and he forced his hands to stay where they were, even though every instinct shouted at him to get the thief--because Arsène was obviously more of a thief than Kaito ever could be--away. Said thief, however, stills somehow knew what those instincts were screaming because that voice--Kaito's voice in a lower timbre that somehow seem to have texture to it--amusedly asked, "Why, tantei-san. Don't tell me you're afraid of little ol' me."
The detective kept his eyes straight ahead, unwilling to be baited. "Don't be ridiculous," he stated flatly. "I was merely surprised. I didn't know I would have to be frisked for cuffs to gain even a small amount of trust."
"Hmm," hummed Arsène idly as he carefully pat the other man down. "Well, I could make it more entertaining for you--"
"I'd rather not since I also have to deal with Kaito on a daily basis," deadpanned Saguru.
Those hands froze as one was in the middle of their search of his jacket. "That isn't exactly a no, tantei-san."
