Playoffs?

Dec 06, 2009 09:16

For those who followed my earlier discussion this week of the problems with playoffs in logic competitions that are not revenue generating sports with millions of fans, it might seem ironic that when I look at college football the only thing I can recommend IS a playoff. Still, the following lines (I'm approximating what they were even though they are in quotes) from yesterday's games were upsetting:

After the 32-13 SEC Championship: "Well, people were saying, if Florida and Alabama had a really close game, they might play again in the BCS championship" - Really, people were saying that? Are these people just SEC administrators or people we should take seriously?

Seconds after Texas escaped with their lives in a sloppy last 2 minutes of a game to Nebraska, "I'm sure a lot of people are thankful that Texas won, to save the BCS from chaos." So, having 5 undefeated teams entering the bowls, but having 'bama and Texas playing is not chaos. Having 4 undefeated teams entering the bowls, but having 'bama and Cincinnati play is chaos?* Really? I think, outside of Texas fans, most of us were sad they didn't lose because the BCS didn't get "chaos", since chaos tends to lead to change, or so one would think.

*(In discussion with friends, I was very clear I thought the human votes would "adjust" to make sure a big BCS conference team - in this case only Cincinnati - would jump over TCU even with their hardly convincing escape at Pitt. The process is so so broken.)
