So that's it. It's out of my hands now. It doesn't feel like it's ~gone~ though, you know. I've had a really shitty headache all day, so maybe that's withdrawal symptoms or something! The moment of a feeling of completion will come soon enough, there was a spark of that when I was printing it out yesterday. Now I'm going to take a few days off, and then start on my super-excellent essay for my super-retarded subject. Eh.
Anyway, it's been a while since I posted about the films I've been watching, so here's a list:
Hairspray (John Waters, 1988) - rewatch - 9/10
De battre mon coeur s'est arrêté [The Beat That My Heart Skipped] (Jacques Audiard, 2005) - 5.5/10 Is this the lowest rating I've given since I started "rating" the films I watch? I think it is. Meh, Romain Duris is pretty but this film was pretty bland. Um, but reading this on the wikipedia page: "Filmmaker Gus Van Sant caused controversy when he claimed that The Beat That My Heart Skipped portrays all domestic intercourse as rape. Duris responded to these remarks at a press conference in Milan by threatening Van Sant with physical violence, claiming that he was going to "get a shotgun and murder Van Sant's dog."" Kinda makes me want to knock up the rating a bit higher. I love Van Sant, but I don't get his claim at all. Duris' reaction is gold though. It's an "unsourced statement" though so who knows how true it is. Who cares!
The Rules of Attraction (Roger Avary, 2002) - rewatch - 11/10
Mutual Appreciation (Andrew Bujalski, 2005) - 8/10
The Craft (Andrew Fleming, 1996) - rewatch - 8/10
Election (Alexander Payne, 1999) - rewatch - 9.5/10
Disturbia (D.J. Caruso, 2007) - 9/10
River's Edge (Tim Hunter, 1986) - rewatch - 12/10 - This will always be in my list of top ten favourite films ever.
New York, New York (Martin Scorsese, 1977) - 11/10 This film cops a lot of crap for supposedly being a "lesser" Scorsese film or whatever, but I fucking loved it. My favourite, favourite moment is when Jimmy drags Francine out in the snow after reading her poems about him and takes her to get married then and there. She's all surprised and like oh I thought it would be more romantic than this, but it's like the fucking most romantic scene ever. And the end, god it kills me. Also, I'm a bit lot in love with Liza Minelli.
C'est arrivé près de chez vous [Man Bites Dog] (Rémy Belvaux, André Bonzel & Benoît Poelvoorde, 1992) - 9/10 The region 4 dvd of this film is so heavily edited, so fuck that, but the humour (very, very black humour) kind of shines through whatever was missing.
Anything Else (Woody Allen, 2003) - 7/10
Scoop (Woody Allen, 2006) - 7.5/10
Diner (Barry Levinson, 1982) - 8.5/10
Citizen Kane (Orson Welles, 1941) - rewatch - 9.5/10
Rushmore (Wes Anderson, 1998) - rewatch - 11/10
Persona (Ingmar Bergman, 1966) - 9/10
The Panic in Needle Park (Jerry Schatzberg, 1971) - 7.5/10
Polyester (John Waters, 1981) - 9.5/10
Serial Mom (John Waters, 1994) - 8/10 - oh yeah, video store geek character ftw!
Radiance (Rachel Perkins, 1998) - 9/10 - great way to start my re-education in Australian cinema history, so good.
Yeah, a lot of comfort rewatching of old favourites went on. Shit, seven weeks and that's all I watched? Woah. Nevermind, I bought a big bag of dvds home from work, and some from the local library so that should keep me busy for a while.
Aaand, don't ask me what I'm going to be doing with my life after uni because my answer will most likely involve: a.) my fist and b.) your face because c.) i don't know!
