People often believe photos are free public domain, and that photographers are not artists in the same way say painters or sculptors are and they may merrily rip photos as they see fit*.

Enter law suit of Shepard Fairey against AP. This could be very interesting battle of artists rights infringed on by other artists.



"Shepard Fairey, the Los Angeles street artist who brought us the iconic Obama poster, and the Associated Press have been up in arms over whether or not the AP should receive compensation for Fairey's use of a photograph taken in 2006 by AP freelance photographer Mannie Garcia. Fairey filed a lawsuit against the Associated Press recently, claiming that he did not violate the AP's intellectual property rights."

*not to say artist collaborations are not awsome and cool. Jsut don't steal other people's things to make your own. Ask nice.
