This was a letter to my friend E 02/08/2000. I miss Nescafe.
So, I decide to go at public transport the GB way. Assuage my fears of
tunnel monsters and punks trying to steal my snack cakes and make my way
into London.
I rise late in my new cat free flat and curl and stretch sumptuously in my
black sheets, grinning at the lack of kitty fur floating about. Pad out to
me new kitchen and makes myself a proper cup on instant Nescafe.
Piling my maps, directions, provisions, book and music (making sure I have
enough cab fare if I really botch this up) into my bag I head out to the
unknown tube of the great underground. "It's Slough to Paddington, to Acton
Town to Picadilly..."I mumble to myself. "Or is it Slough to Acton Town
straight on to Knightsbridge. Oh well. What do the knobby bits on the map
vs. the circles mean" I figure I'll just angle myself towards Harrods and
life will be fine. Indeed it was. Executed like an indigenous person, I find
myself at Knightsbridge (grinning to myself fond remembrance of
The Marquee from
Neverwhere, hoping I can spot him) with a helpful sign saying "Harrods
up to Sloan street, stay on the right, make a left, 2 min walk". Well, that
makes sense. Right? No. Past Gucci and some other strange fancy shops I ask
directions again from a street sweeper and finally find Harrods.
What a place! Makes Pacific Place blush in SHAME! It was all to much. I
bought food, sweets and a good mug that was mine all mine. I intended to get
into London early go to Harrods and ride a red double decker around for a
few hours to get the lay of the land. Well, five hours later I crawler out
of Harrods well fed and well shopped. No, red bus for me today. I shuffled on
home and switch three trains again. Mind the Gap!
The following day it's back into London to see Jillg! I meet her wife and we
sneak of into the city by ourselves. She showed me the fabulous sites of the
West end and Soho. Ever been there? It's fabulous. I don't know if I can
swing it but I want to live there. I don't care if I have a hour commute to
lovely Slough. Ack plah.
I get to go home with Jill at the end of the day. Very exciting. We shopped
and ate and chatted it was all good, warm, and fuzzy. I found something for
you and I had to buy it on a wild hare. I don't know when it may make it
but, someday when I figure out where the post office is, you know you'll
have it!
I have spent the last two days out at Marsten Gate and Jills house. Marsten
Gate is tiny but a really nice facility. We build 250 sq DC just to live in
long enough to build a 1 mill sq facility. Damn were odd. We don't even take
up all the space in the small Marten Gate. The buyer in me just wants to
fill that void...
Back to Slough and to meet my new roomie today... ep.
