A SONG BY A BAND YOU LOVE
The New Pornographers ☆ Graceland. Today, two songs about dying without regrets. The first is a 2004 Matador B-side that doesn't show up very often. It's the story of leading a life of crime, then buying one's way into heaven. Or Elvis's house -- same diff. In my case, it goes, There is something in the will to escape life at last. As we ride into the sunset we burst into flames!! So cool *A*~ Though Together contains only 2.5 good songs and summarily perpetuates Challengers' cloying feyness (chamber-pop? more like chamber-POT amirite fellas), I still love the energy of this band when they come in loud, strong, and excitingly discordant; my Twin Cinema tee is still, as ever, on rotation.
A SONG BY A BAND YOU HATE
Alkaline Trio ☆ I'm Dying Tomorrow. It's a great song. And it's not really hate, just a clash of scenes and preferences. I was a Belle&Sebastian kid, a Rushmore kid. A lot of Alkaline Trio fans were Rage Against kids, Converse kids. We grew up beside each-other, but we rarely if ever ate lunch as one. One of my countless college jobs was with a used-record shop, and everyone there fit into the latter category. No one let me put EP-era Death Cab on the stereo (Plans was only in planning then, and I liked
Photobooth). I didn't know much, or much about music. I found myself humming Jimmy Eat World and saying "naw brah" a lot. In rebellion, I crossed the spectrum and got obsessed with 2Pac. Every job has a silver lining.

1112/30DAYSOF/BLMANGA
A BL manga that makes you cry. I am not as much of a cryer as I am a きゃあああ type person. I am more likely to get a swell in my chest. The only manga in recent history that made me shed legit tears was the opening chapter of Inio Asano's
世界の終わりと夜明け前. But it isn't BL. (Asano is a sentimentalist capable of getting across the kind of sudden, raw emotion you can't bat away. It hits home.)
But I recently finished Ishino Aya's 椿びより, and the scene where Tsubaki asks Hiraiwa to show him photos of Fumio-chan's upcoming enrollment in elementary school, to which Hiraiwa says something like, "What? You can come. You're family, aren't you?" made me *A* intensely! Meanwhile Hiraiwa's friend is watching them with dawning realization ahahaha. Plus! The omake, where H gives T a tea-cup of his own and the latter nearly breaks it in surprise kyaaaaaaaaa OTOME FEERINGU
川
A BL manga that should be licensed. Yoshinaga Fumi's
きのう何食べた? I feel like outside Japan, Yoshinaga is better known for her sillier collections, so it would be wonderful to get her seinen series up on shelves as well. She's an admirable storyteller, and a few of the shorts in Kinou have some interesting things to posit about LTRs. Plus it would be neat to have the featured recipes on hand in the kitchen!
