That's what I love about the DSRK games, they are lol exactly until they are not, and there is practically no modulation between, which makes the Not parts surprisingly poignant. Like the case where you Kevorkian Narita's tru love because she has become a deformed abomination and he couldn't save her. !!! And then b-back to lol again?
Same thing with Gouto! Games ares not so linear with their backstory-building, probs because no one on the team is even sure what is happening, but like Narumi and his "btw I quit being a spy for ethical reasons*", G just throws it out there. I did not know about his punishment when making my previous comment. This shit is seismic, dude. Like, did GOUTO try to quit for ethical reasons too? And blah blah blah deep sadness he carries within him aside, what might be his gain from having such a badass Kuzunoha on his hands suddenly. I mean besides the whole part where Raidou's probably not going to die horribly for a while orz. Not that Raidou is about to turn against his own establishment, seeing as he wouldn't even turn against some old creeps in a village in the woods somewhere. Not so good with gray areas no
* srs dying to know what happened nghhhhh and you know if/when we find out it's gonna be wild
Eventually R is going to somehow set G free. Like Aladdin and the genie. Somehow. I am convinced. I will cry and cry.
From my perspective tho Yatagarasu haven't yet ordered anything worth quitting over? Maybe in the past they did, and G couldn't hack it, but I haven't seen anything so far in these games. Or maybe they did yet I personally am too Law to notice a ha ha. Idk, suspect G's is a more personal guilt, like he is semi-voluntarily atoning for something bad he did, beyond trying to be a conscientious objector. Ala Kenshin atoning for being Battousai or sth. Logically, if G's punishment is to watch over his successors forever, then his crime must have had something to do with failure to watch over somebody? Maybe?
Wtf are Yatagarasu anyway, are they literally part of Amaterasu Omikami's heavenly bureaucracy, is what I keep wondering. The implication is that they have some sort of divine connection but I'm not sure how far up the chain that goes, or whether it's even true or whether they just want you to THINK they have a direct line to the big cheese.
Also I keep forgetting that N is among other things an "agent of Yatagarasu" which means that he presumably considers them an ethical step up from the military, not that that's saying much, if he's willing to work for them. Larger more complicated questions of world-saving aside, "stop demons from killing people" as a mission statement seems pretty solid to me.
I actually love that the game just randomly tosses out bits of critical backstory in throwaway lines. Esp. coming from G and N, it seems like their style.
Btw in SA when the Herald suddenly shows up @ Agency office (!!!) for like 30 seconds and N tries to offer her a drink or a cigarette I lol'd.
unpacking all this just sets my dorky heart aglowwwwmotorbikeJune 28 2009, 18:51:13 UTC
No idea what Y is except, like, this network of points and people all across AU Japan, connected to the Four Great Families. Super staunch Lawful Good alignment, their mission is noble and they get shit done man. Gouto's punishment could be self-imposed, yeah, but am dyingggg to know what happened because G does say it's "about the cruelest sentence you can come up with". Also I seem to recall a chick at Shin Sekai who has her own Gouto-douji -- man in the hat next to her -- so maybe it's just a standard punishment for fucking up. Not sure how come that guy is a guy while Gouto is a kitty. Bet that's a personal choice. Kitties can have it pretty sweet, idk.
Still up in the air whether or not Narumi can see demons, as most people can't, and he doesn't hear Gouto. Dk how he ended up an agent at this rate, but keeping in mind AU Japan is constantly being ravaged by monsters, it holds with DSRKs already dubious continuity that the non-asshole portion of the military is connected with prevention measures. They hire summoners too, see. Also fun fact, evidently WW1 still happened? All I can get re: N's past in that he bailed, "indicting a superior officer", and that it's a big sore spot for both parties. Weird to think of N being bitter, but then Raidou changes that :3 :3 :3 After all DSRK is alllll about Atonement, lol so Japanese
Also speaking of national voices, how politically charged is SA, wow. I was actually surprised/let down that Abaddon dropped that course and went for a vague religious charge instead, which given the SMT standard wasn't nearly as incendiary. I really want to hear more about what women thought about the changing fashions, wah! I also love that Tae is a hero for so many girls still mired in tradition ♥
