After working at one, my best assumption for this is to hide the hideous stains.

Possibly, but I was visiting friends at their Anime Boston hotel room last night and they showed me the Mysterious Stains (TM)* ottoman that had a similarly dark, garish fabric pattern.

*May or may not contain DNA.

I always love it when a hotel suite is bigger than my house. It makes me feel like I've been living in a closet.
