Title: Valentine’s day... or something else entirely.
Author: motoko1969
Rating: PG
Genre: Crack fic/Romance (well sorta)
Pairing: Ten/Donna and OCs
Disclaimer: Hum well the Doctor and Donna belong to RTD and Co as well as the BBC. Valentin "belongs" to himself (and a man named John)
A/N: This is me going bonkers !!! Hum I promise to go back to all my other unfinished (normal?) projects but I had to get this out, now that my muse has come back from its extended vacation... and apparently this is my contribution to Valentine's Day as well *meh* I realize this is a bit weird and probably OOC...
A/N2: Happy Birthday Valentin :D ! He turned 17 today ! Yes his name comes from the fact that he was born today (his sisters have "odder" names, he is the only one with a "regular" name).

Today was Valentine’s Day, and yes Donna hated Valentine’s Day... but today was also another special day for someone very dear to her heart. She felt really silly feeling like that, but it was his birthday and she had never missed any of his birthdays, well she was not always able to see him in person but she would always send a special something for him, since she had met him all those years ago.

He was one good thing in her life, it had happened while she was on a trip to visit an old friend of hers, they were on holiday and suddenly the phone had rung calling her friend back to report for duty. Just like that her friend had asked if she wanted to join her. Donna had agreed, she knew what her friend did for working and the prospect of smelling like fish for days to come was not entirely how she had expected to spend the holidays... but she went with her anyway. That was in 1995, and to this day she has never regretted the fishy smell that had followed her for a couple of days even after she had gone back to London. On this particular 14th of February 1995, she had witnessed from very close the birth of Valentin. Not many people could boast about seeing this with their own two eyes and she had barely talked about this, too afraid someone might ruin it with stupid comments. Aside from her friend no one ever knew she had experienced something so fabulous, but every now and then she would get an email with pictures of Valentin with some updated news from her friend and this would just make her Valentine Day a bit more bearable.

But now here she was, millions miles away from Earth and she felt really down and sad. She hadn’t seen Valentin in a long while and today more than ever she missed him. She felt bad for felling so down when she was in the TARDIS travelling around the Universe with the greatest man she had ever met. She turned her Ipad on, and there it was, as always, the mail with the update pictures and a quick word from her friend hoping she was doing alright on her side and other side notes. Without any warning tears started streaming down her face, she couldn’t help it. Exhausted from her adventures of the day and the longing for friends she missed, she went to her room to have a lay down, possibly sleep until tomorrow so she can be her cheery self again, she certainly didn’t want to run into the Doctor like this.

The Doctor had caught a glimpse of her fleeing to her room, he had noticed that she had been crying and was wondering why... maybe she had watched one of these silly sad movies she sometimes watched which made her cry. The TARDIS was humming to him and prompting him to go to the library. He found the discarded Ipad on the coffee table and feeling slightly guilty had a peak at what could make Donna so sad. For a moment there he had been afraid something bad had happened to either Wilf or her mother, but the latest email she got was just from a person he had never heard Donna talk about, and it looked halfway between a biology essay with pictures and a fairy tale story. He felt very jealous of whomever it was who sent this to Donna, until he came to the end and realized it was written by a woman. The very last line of the email struck him as really odd though, it said: Come see Valentin one of these days, you probably miss “your boy” and I miss you too.

The Doctor sat there feeling a bit bad for peaking into his companion life, but realizing at the same time she had never talked about this friend and her “boy” even to him. He figured that either she kept it as a secret because she didn’t want anybody to trash it like most people had crushed her before or she just didn’t want to talk about the past. It was Valentine’s Day, and even if he harboured more than friendship feelings for her and he knew she didn’t feel like that, he would try to make her day. He had a few phone calls to make to figure out who this Valentin was and where he could find him and Donna’s friend.

A couple of hours later found a giddy Doctor knocking on Donna’s door, he had brought a cup of tea to a bleary Donna who acidly asked if it was still the 14th... He didn’t know how to answer to this and just told her to finish her cup and join him in the control room with a bathing suit and a wetsuit. After a lot of grumbling she had agreed, thinking he was finally taking her to that long promised beach.

Once Donna had joined the Doctor, who still looked liked his usual self with his pinstriped suit, she became a bit suspicious but he hushed her quickly and asked her to trust him. He didn’t really have to say that, because she always trusted him and this time was no different. When they gently landed he went to the doors before she could get out and had a quick peak outside, the only thing she saw was the sun setting over the horizon. He came back to her and asked her to close her eyes. If she didn’t know better, Donna would say he was planning something awfully romantic for Valentine’s Day but she knew he knew better, if he were to do that she would smack him into next week, so with a bit of apprehension she closed her eyes... he led her outside the TARDIS. They walked a couple of metres and he let her go warning her not to open her eyes.

It took only a couple of seconds but she was engulfed in another person arms and hugged strongly, her first instinct was to resist it, but she figured that the Doctor was still somewhere around and she was not in any danger. And then the person hugging her talked and she recognised the voice instantly, making her gasp and open her eyes quickly. She was standing in front of her friend and a boat was waiting at the end of the quay. Not losing a moment her friend took her hand and guided her to the boat.

“Let’s go see your boy, I know exactly where he is right now!” she had said and Donna had turned her head around to see the Doctor smiling smugly at her, she knew he had had a look into her inbox and she would get back to him for it later but right now she was too happy to care. The Doctor followed them on the boat and kept on smiling the whole while the boat journey took to get where the pod was located.

Donna was smiling, it was not the beach the Doctor had promised but suddenly this Valentine’s Day looked better than the ones she had had in a long time, probably since the day Valentin was born... and here she was fifteen years later, back to this place where Valentin was born and she had witnessed it. Her friend stopped the boat and threw the small anchor into the water, got her filming equipment ready and dove into the evening waters. Donna had a quick look at the Doctor smiling fondly at her and only hesitated for a second before joining her friend into the wild waters of the sea.

Swimming with these orcas brought so many memories back to Donna and for a moment she felt younger than ever. For a magic minute Valentin let her swim right next to him and all the horrors of this world and all the other worlds she had been to melted away only to leave her filled with joy and love for the big marine mammal swimming next to her... and even if she wasn’t quite ready to admit it yet she felt a huge wave of love for the Time Lord who had brought her here on this very special day.

After another fifteen minute she got back to the boat where the Doctor was waiting for her with a big towel, which he drew around her shoulders. Her friend was still underwater filming a little bit more until the sun disappeared completely. A friend whom all these years ago had gained a huge recognition in her marine biology field for being able to film a killer whale giving birth in the wild.

She turned around to hug the Doctor, and feeling more a bit daring she even kissed him. Maybe she could get to like Valentine’s Day after all, if it turned out she had a very caring man like the Doctor right by her side.

The End.

Oh and yes by something special at the beginning of the fic I do mean a big fish :p !!! And yes DT in a wetsuit is probably something I would pay to see too... :p !
