Author's Notes: This hasn't been read by a beta. It originally was for au-bigbang, but some drama came up with my beta and I didn't get a chance to get it posted by the due date. Despite that, I'm very happy with the way this came out and extremely proud, as it's the longest worded (finished) fic I've ever written.

Later that afternoon, true to her word, Cook showed up at 1:15 ready to cover Marty for a few hours. When he asked her, on his way out the door, if she had found a reason for Mr. Alstead's liquified organs yet, she just blushed, said not yet and then practically shoved him out the door.

The subway ride and the walk to Grant Avenue Elementary School, was uneventful and Marty made it just in time to see the last of the kids waiting outside to be picked up by parents, but there was no Talia.

He did see Ronda Lew, Talia's first grade teacher, standing outside talking to a boy who he knew was in Talia's class, because she told him once when he saw them talking after school one day when he picked her up.

"Dr. Pino, hello. It's good to see you again." Miss Lew smiled as she saw Marty approach.

"Likewise, Miss Lew." Mary smiled back. "Is Talia inside?"

Miss Lew frowned. "Dr. Pino, Talia didn't come to school today."

"What"? Marty ask with a frown of his own.

"Mrs. Andrews called this morning and said that Talia wasn't feeling very well and would probably miss the next few days of school."

"Oh." Marty said. "Alright, well thank you."

Miss Lew nodded. "Have a good day, Dr. Pino."

"You too, Miss Lew." Marty replied.

At first Marty thought nothing of it, as he walked back to the street. He figured that Miranda was just busy with taking care of Talia and hadn't yet had a chance to call him to let him know that she was staying home. But the more he continued to think about it, the more he realized that something was wrong. With Jason out of town, that meant that Miranda would have to stay home with Talia, which meant she would have called into work. But on his way out the door, no one had told him that she had called in. He'd even passed Stella on his way out, but she didn't say anything.

Something was definitely hinky.

Marty quickly pulled out his cellphone and dialed Jason and Miranda's home number. When there was no answer, he tried Miranda's cell. When there was still no answer, he really began to worry.

There was only one person who would know what was going on, besides Miranda and that was Drew. So, Marty dialed his cell.

"Hagen?" He answered after a couple of rings.

"It's Marty."

"Hey Marty, what's up?"

"Did Miranda tell you Talia was sick?" he asked.

"No. I had no idea. In fact, I haven't talked to her since I saw them last night at dinner and Talia seemed fine then. What's going on Marty?"

Marty explained how he had come to pick Talia up from school, but that the teacher said Miranda had called, but when he tried to call her, there was no answer.

"And I'm really starting to worry," he finished. "I think I'm going to head over to their apartment to see if they're home." He said, hailing a cab.

"I'll meet you there. Call me if you find out anything."

"Will do." Marty then hung up the phone and got into the cab.

Drew arrived ten minutes after Marty had. "Anything?" He asked, running up to the coroner.

"Nothing," Marty shook his head. "There aren't home."

"Shit," Drew sighed anxiously. He was really starting to get a bad feeling now. "I have a spare key, so let's go check out the apartment." He said.

Marty nodded. "Okay."

Once they were inside the apartment, they began to look around for anything out of the ordinary. Drew immediately headed for his daughter's bedroom, but didn't see anything unusual except for a few toys out of place, but she was seven and it happened.

"Drew!" Marty called from the kitchen.

"What?" Drew asked, running into the room.

Marty looked pale and was holding up a note, that Drew could tell was written in Miranda's handwriting. "You need to read this," he said, holding out the note for Drew.

Drew -

This isn't a joke. Maxwell Bennett is making me write this right now, while Talia is in her bedroom picking out some toys to take with us. He says going to take us somewhere and he wants you to find us. He says it's time for the games to begin and this is your second chance. To prove it's really him, he's going to leave finger prints on this note. He says if you don't find us, you know what will happen. Please hurry.

As soon as the words registered in his mind, Drew dropped the note and ran over to the kitchen sink, and threw up.

Marty watched, as he pulled out his cellphone and dialed a number.

After a few rings, there was a click. "Mac Taylor?"

"It's Marty. Maxwell Bennett has Miranda and Talia."
