"Sam, I have a question for you," Miranda said as she walked into the office that Samantha shared with Lindsay.

"Shoot," she replied.

She took a deep breath. "I don't think I can...handle..." And then she burst into tears.

Samantha got out oher her seat, shut the door behind her and guided Miranda to her seat. "Miranda, what's wrong?"

Miranada began to pull herself togehter. "I don't think I can date Drew anymore."

Samantha nodded slowly. "I was wondering when this would happen."

She looked up sharply. "What?"

Samantha went and pulled Lindsay's chair around until she was sitting in front of Miranda. "Look, long distance is hard. It takes it's toll on a relationship. And really, lately it seems like Talia is the only thing you guys have in common anymore. You've grown, but you've grown apart too."

"It's that obvious?" she asked.

"I'm close to both of you, so it's obvious to me." She reached over and took Miranda's hands in hers. "In all honesty, I wouldn't be surprised if he was okay with this. Just don't keep Talia away from him, okay?"

"I would never do that," she said fiercely. "Even though he's not here, he's a good father. He takes care of her as well as he can from New Orleans." She looked up at Samantha. "He's a very good man. I just...I can't be in a relationship with him anymore. I need someone who's here, who's into the things I'm into."

"Then you need to tell him that."

She sighed. "I have the next week and a half off since he was going to come up and visit. I think I might call him, tell him tonight, and see if he wants Talia there for next week. It's not fair that he not get to see her just because I don't want to date him, but I don't think I could be around the whole time."

"Well...I can get two days off, one to go down there and one to pick her up. Why don't I take Talia down there and you just...you just take this week and a half to just come to terms with everything, okay?"

"You'd do that?" she asked, surprised.

"Hey, you're family, he's family and Talia's family. I do a lot of things for my family. I thought you'd learned that by now." She got up and hugged her quickly. "Why don't you call him now while I arrange things with Mac?"

"Okay," she said with a nod, hugging Samantha back before she pulled out her cell phone.

After two rings she heard a familiar voice. "Hey," he said.

"Hey," she said quietly.

"Is something wrong?" Drew asked. "Is Talia okay?"

She took a deep breath. "She's fine. But...I'm not."

"Do you need me there?"

"No. That's why I'm calling. I don't think I can do this anymore, Drew. I just...I can't." There was a long pause, and she felt she just had to fill up the silence. "I would never keep Talia from you, never. She's your daughter, and you're doing the best you can do with everything. But I need someone here in New York. I can't do the long distance thing anymore."

"You'll still let me see her?" he asked.

She suddenly got angry. "Do you really think I'm the type of woman to keep a doting father away from his child just because I stopped dating him? Do you think I'm a vindictive bitch or something?"

"No, Miranada, I don't think that at all," he said soothingly. "I meant you'll still let me see her this week?"

"Oh," she replied, feeling mollified. "Yes, of course. You planned your entire schedule around this. But...I can't have you up here in New York. It would just be too weird right now. But Samantha suggested she could take Talia down to see you and then pick her up at the end of the week."

"I'd get her all to myself, then?"

"Well, I'm pretty sure you'd have to share her with your mother, but yeah. It'd just be you two."

"It means a lot that you trust me so much."

"I knew as she got older there were going to be times she'd stay with you when I wasn't around," she said, and then she sighed. "I just thought I'd get a few more years before that happened."

"I'll take good care of her, Miranda. I promise."

"I know you will." Miranda looked around. "I'm at wok, but I'll have Sam call you when she figures out which flight she's catching. Did you want her to fly out tomorrow or the next day?

"Whenver she can get a flight," he said. "I'll be ready."

"Okay." She smiled slightly. "We can talk again after Talia comes back. We need to make some plans."

"Yeah," he said. "Call me when she gets back up there."

"I will. Bye."

"Bye."

She hung up and looked at the phone, and suddenly it felt as if a huge weight had been lifted off her shoulders. In a moment of absolute clarity, she knew, deep down, that this was the way it was going to be that would make everything work.
