One Dead, Four Wounded In Courtroom Shooting

Nov 29, 2006 18:33

I wanted to title this entry "How Does This Hang-Wringing Motherfucker Sleep At Night?", but then I figured that if he wasn't going to put the apropriate headline on this story, then someone needed to.

Here's the story:

May 17 was a bloody Wednesday for Turkey's anti-scarf secularism. A lawyer charged into Turkey's Supreme Administrative Court and opened fire on a panel of five judges. One judge died of a bullet in his head. Four others were wounded. The assailant was purportedly acting as God's soldier to punish the panel for upholding a ban on Islamic headscarves.

And the given headline? Turkey's Headscarf Ban - Suppressive Rulings.

Now take a look at this gem of editorialism:

Terrorism must not be rewarded by a change in the policies it targets. Yet violence, despicable though it is, does provide insights into the morality of laws. When a system is suppressive, the people resist laws and the cost of law enforcement skyrockets. No legal system must ignore this simple truth. "Tell me how much they spend on law enforcement," I say to my students, "and I will tell you how good their laws are." Suppressive laws are inherently expensive.

Ok, now go back. Read that last excerpt again, all of it, and then read the first sentence of it again. If you spot the contradiction, then congratulations - you don't have a severe case of Attention Deficit Disorder.

Now, spouse abuse is never acceptable, and one should not accomodate the demands of a barbarian. Yet however abusive a husband may be, this does provide insight into the quality of domestic servditude being provided. When dinner isn't ready on time, it's infuriating. Have you ever been hungry before? I know I have been! And it's no picnic! Now that is a simple truth if I've ever seen one. "Tell me how many bruises a woman has," I say to my students, "and I will tell you how prompt she is with her domestic responsibilities." Laziness is inherently dangerous.

Yeah, you tell those judges. Tell those judges how they're holding back the progress of humanity by not lifting the ban on the wearing of religious symbols in Universities and government buildings. I'm sure that every bandage change they get in the hospital will remind them of how wrong they were to be such bullies.

mothwentbad news, wtf of the day, religion
