Non-spoiler commentary on 9: It was pretty, but I left unsatisfied. Much more could have been done with what was present in the movie, but it wasn't capitalized on.
Yeah. Sancho and I talked about it and we're more or less in agreement with you. And watch the short it was based off of by the same director. I think you get more of a feel for what 9 was supposed to be, but a few too many fingers stretched it out into what it is, without really adding enough new material to make it interesting. Or rather the new material added wasn't fleshed out enough and didn't jive with the rest of the movie.
Of your endings I think I like ending #1 the most.
I really feel that there had to be more to this movie. Something that likely made it an R rated movie, and the studios went SHIT SHIT theres /no/ way an R rated animated movie will sell in theaters, so they cut whatever that was out, and could only make it PG-13 and gave us the hour and nineteen minuet version, with a weird ending that doesn't make complete sense.
But maybe I have too much faith in people. Maybe this was Shane Acker showing that he just can't make a full length feature film, and showing that 9 producers and 2 co-producers aren't enough (or are too much) to save a narrative.

Not that it is bad. But kinda like the movie Hancock, it has a lot of potential but wasn't fleshed out enough.
