shopping

My parents have, for both Christmas and my birthday, given me Wal-Mart gift certificates. No big deal, except that I really don't shop at Wal-Mart. Recently, however, I've had the urge to indulge my inner consumer. Today, I decided to exercise that urge using said gift cards.

Here's why my messed up psyche steps to the plate. Certain things it won't let me spend "gift money" on. Gas. Food. Consumables. Gift money should, according to my brain, be spent on something somewhat lasting. Wal-Mart's electronics section (my first destination for such things) was bereft of anything I either needed or wanted. Knowing it's my parents, though, I felt I should get something somewhat needed. This is what kept me from buying things I only mildly wanted in the electronics department.

So I found myself in men's wear. I started playing tennis a month or so ago, and discovered that I'm going through t-shirts in the course of a week much faster than I had previously been doing. I guess that happens when, twice a week, I reduce a t-shirt to a sopping mess of sweat and must put on a different one if I am to socialize later that evening with anyone at all.

Fortunately, they had many t-shirts that would fit the bill. That is to say, solid colors, no pockets, roomy. I grabbed one of each color they had in my size. Still had a lot of gift card money left. So I bought socks. Because I need socks, too. Shirt gets sweaty to the point of "ew", you can imagine what my feet are doing to my socks. I bought a passel, a plethora, even, of non-white socks in varying shades of beige and brown to wear to work. I also needed another pair of shorts to wear, so I got some of those too. I must have looked like a typical college student, checking out at Wal-Mart with a stack of t-shirts and socks.

I still have money left on those gift cards, too....

I'm not as bad as one friend I have, though, who will occasionally go shopping instead of doing laundry.
