As February begins to chase its tail into March, I feel it an opportune time to post the YA books that I have enjoyed reading so far in 2006. And because I feel the need to be important today, I shall give my list a proper bris and snip a little name on it...thinking, thinking, thinking...
Okay, I think I have it. I shall call my recommended reading list my FLASHLIGHT LIST since all of the books below were good enough to keep me reading beyond the time when my husband turns off his nightstand light and I therefore default to a flashlight as not to disturb his sleep (no mind that he has no problem disturbing my sleep with barnyard style snoring). The heat he generates in the bed compensates so I shall stop complaining.
FLASHLIGHT LIST FOR JANUARY AND FEBRUARY OF 2006
Girls for Breakfast by David Yoo (hilarious, raw, wonderfully conflicted character and a beautiful ending)
Inexcusable by Chris Lynch (rattling but important and very good)
Peaches by Jodi Lynn Anderson (reads like a good movie, all characters grow and are fun to follow, sweet)
A Room on Lorelei Street by Mary Pearson (lyrical, intimately told, amazing)
Ruby Tuesday by Jennifer Kogler (OMG! laugh out loud funny, unique story, terrific characters, PERFECT)
A Bad Boy Can Be Good for A Girl by Tanya Lee Stone (a must read for our daughters, clever, seamless, vindicating)
Be More Chill by Ned Vizzini (bizarre, real, funny and perhaps, prophetic)
AUXILLARY FLASHLIGHT-WORTHY LIST OF MATERIAL READ OUTSIDE OF YA:
Charles Simic's The World Doesn't End (masterful poet of the real and surreal, digestible and thought provoking)
Anniversary edition of the New Yorker (admittingly read all cartoons before delving into the heady stuff, LOVE the Susan Orlean article because she spoke directly to my WIP! Pigeons!)
Vegan Planet Cookbook (mango coulis...are you kidding? Love how this book is organized, too. Lots of "sections")
The Wife by Meg Wolitzer (the woman can write...funny, engaging and her descriptions/metaphors alone are worth the read)
ELLEN'S TOP FLASHLIGHT LIST TITLE OF THE WEEK:
Ellen and I are currently reading Charlotte's Web and although Ellen can't read on her own yet, I am definitely, positive that this is worthy of reading with a flashlight under the covers. That E.B. White set the bar pretty high, eh? Lovely and so human.
