Character Information:
Full Name: The United Socialist Soviet Republic / Roshia
Series Taken From: Afghanis-tan
Power Retained: Unfortunately (or fortunately) she has no actual powers, besides being a nation.
Background: The series "Afghanis-tan" focuses on the life of the nation with the same name. Prior to this series, it can be assumed that Roshia lived through everything her people did throughout history. Growing up it could be said she had the most complicated life ever (starting off as a Swedish trading post and then to become occupied by Vikings because seriously), with people killing each other and rioting and killing each other and so on and so forth.
The first strip talks briefly about the "Great Game" of the 19th century, which was the great rivalry between England and Russia (or in this case, Bri-ten and Roshia) over supremacy in Central Asia. Technically this started with the Treaty of Gulistan, a treaty that put an end to the first Russo-Persian War. Russia's new tsar, Alexander I, was eager to control all the land around him, and annexed Georgia in the process, just as Persia's boss killed off all his enemies in Georgia. Persia tried to keep Russia out, even going so far as to try to ally with France. Which failed. Russia more or less kicked Persia's ass, enraging them enough to declare 'jihad' (holy war, basically God wants us to smite you now and we will become victorious) on them. Too bad it didn't help. Russia ended up with claim over pretty much everything Persia had control of, and free access to Iran, as well as the access for military to station itself in the Caspian Sea.
England determined that Russia was a threat to India at this point, which was considered to be a "jewel in the crown" of the empire. England became worried that Afghanistan would be used against her in taking India away. So, the first Anglo-Afghan war was launched; England declares war on Afghanistan, and hoping that by maybe sticking someone pro-England in charge of ruling Afghanistan, it will cut down on Russian rule and make it a more stable part of the British Empire. However, this eventually fell apart, as once the British troops left, so did the control they had.
Russia continued to calmly invade, taking Afghanistan little by little. This continues for a few years, even escalating into the second Anglo-Afghan war, all in attempts to try to keep Russia out.
When World War I was starting to occur, Russia agreed to leave England alone with Afghanistan and will agree to conduct all relations with Afghanistan through England to focus on Germany, thereby forming the 'Anglo-Russian Alliance'. Persia was divided up between the two of them, and Afghanistan's borders would remain unchanged. Things kind of simmer down in the area since now the Great War is starting.
Then, in 1917, the October Revolution starts, which was just sort of a follow up to the February Revolution that happened in the same year. This lead to the overthrowing of the current government in Roshia's house, caused the Russian Civil War and caused the creation of the Soviet Union in 1922. Thank you, Bolsheviks. They're pretty much like 'THESE TREATIES WITH ENGLAND ARE USELESS' and they go to war again. Russia signs a 'Treaty of Friendship' with Afghanistan, and supports her in the war against England, who once again tried to claim Afghanistan as part of the British Empire. Russia tried to leech from the treaty as much as possible, which was making Afghanistan greatly uncomfortable. The United Kingdom did not approve of this, as now Afghanistan was being tugged out of her 'control' and 'influence'. This power play lasted until World War II, where they both decided to agree to disagree and team up against Germany again, and they both forced Afghanistan to have nothing to do with Germany at all.
World War II had Russia fighting on the side of the Allied Powers with the United States, United Kingdom, China, and France. And Russia was on the winning side, which of course caused more problems, since now everyone was wary of the influence that Russia had over possible 'satellite' states. The Bandung Conference was formed in 1955 and included a bunch of Asian countries, including Pakistan and Afghanistan, to counteract influence from both the United States and the Soviet Union and attempt to stay out of the Cold War. This was the first big step to the Non-Alignment Movement, which was made to try to counteract the Cold War and keep the other nations out of it, trying to offer protection to anyone who chose to be independent. 1962 started the Sino-Indian war over territory dispute between China and India. Military victory for China, and China gets claim over Tibet. China was feeling lucky, and so in 1969 the Sino-Soviet border conflict began, and they argued over how big their 'houses' were allowed to be. China was war hungry, and there was debate over whether or not China and the Soviet Union would go to nuclear war with each other. This kind of terminated their friendship, and they were no longer besties, though nobody threw nukes at each other. China ran off to side with the US and Russia was primarily alone.
In 1971, the Indo-Soviet Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation was formed, mostly because the United States decided to give Pakistan with military supplies. India decided to side with the USSR, which allowed Russia to spread some Soviet policies and allowed them to focus on the potential dangers of the US and Pakistan being friends. In turn, India severed ties with China to remain friends with Russia, and the two nations are on good terms even to present day.
Of course, this means little considering the 'Cold War' is a proverbial mud fight, bitch fest, with Roshia and Meriken spying on each other. Constantly. Sending each other 'gifts' in the form of 'spying materials'.
Someone might be a little sore they lost the Space Race. Maybe.
She was about to send Meriken another 'gift' when suddenly she ended up BOLDLY GOING WHERE NO NATION HAS GONE BEFORE.
Only not.
Just one wrong turn in her giant house lead her... someplace else.
Sample Third-Person Post:
The world had become one giant chess board, and Roshia simply sat overlooking it all with a hand to her cheek and a bemused smirk on her lips.
The attention had shifted once the war ended. Roshia was intent on having people live in her house, as many as possible, because it was so big and lonely. It helped that Meriken was across the ocean, being destructive and reckless in her own little way. So far away while so many nations were struggling to rebuild their economies. And who would help them?
Roshia. Of course. Who else would be able to do such a thing, besides the Motherland? Nobody else was close enough or generous enough, and her house was big enough to hold anyone weary from the war, who needed a place to stay..
It was a bit amusing - though not very surprising - that it was Merikenwho would be opposite her in this little 'game' she started. After all, Meriken was just one of several signatures on the treaty that divided Germany up in the first place when all the Allies were occupying her.
Then, things just got interesting.
China was suffering, and since they shared borders, once again it was Roshia who was compassionate. Understanding. Nobody suffered like she did, and to hear the problems of other nations was almost laughable, but it didn't take long for them to establish a 'friendship'.
Another pawn removed from the board, another piece snatched away from the hero.
The 'space race' was also amusing, almost. It was infuriating how that brat of a nation stuck her nose in where it didn't belong, competing over whatever she could. Bragging rights? How irritating. Never mind that Roshia was the first one to send a human into space or strike Venus with unmanned aircraft. Meriken's only accomplishment was landing on the moon, and though it was a victory Roshia should have obtained on her own, it was unimportant in the overall scheme of things.
Just pieces moved around on a board littered with black and white.
She knew of the Bandung Conference, and knew that could potentially cause problems, but she'd see. Wait it out, see who wasn't involved. Or, who really didn't agree with it. She wasn't a horrible person, after all. Roshia was very understanding, when she wanted to be.
She could always give Indo another call. Maybe they could meet up for tea again.
Sample First-Person Post:
[The audio clicks on first, and initially there is nothing to be seen. Nothing to be heard, either, except for a few taps, and some muttered, almost incomprehensible speech in Russian. This repeats a few times, until finally the video clicks on, and a young looking red eyed girl with silvery white hair is seen, red eyes wide and curious.
Tap tap tap. The sounds are her poking the device, which is on the floor looking up at her, and she's crouched over it, careful of her mink coat which is black around her.]
Ahh.. I see, so it does have purpose. Very curious.. I wonder what this is.. [Gently, she picks it up, cradling it in her hands, expression curious. She tilts her head before she tries in English, words stumbling a bit as she's not used to the different language but she knows enough to communicate at least. Her voice is young sounding but laced with an accent.] Is working, da? Found in pocket of coat. Never seen before.
[She frowns, shakes the device a bit, and holds it up again.]
Tell Roshia where she is. Need to get home. Was home, but no longer. Impossibility.
