I miss the forsythia. We used to have huge bushes on the side of our house in NJ. Went to a market up in Houston Thursday and almost cried...they had masses of lilacs. Lilacs are my favorite flower, always have been, and it killed me to leave mine behind, but you can't grow them in Texas. Sigh.
Our fosythia here in New Hampshire is absolute gorgeous right now. Lilac is our state flower and my lilac bushes are covered with buds. I'm so sorry you had to leave yours behind. I can imagine how heartbreaking that was.
I grouse a lot about the things I can't grow up here because of the severe winters (I'm in zone 3,) but I tend to forget there are also many things people can't grow because it's too warm where they live. Maybe you can find some new treasures to love that you couldn't grow in New Jersey. I hope so.
Thanks. I just fell in love with the set at K-Mart, and spent money I hadn't really planned to spend. But I love it.
They should bloom okay. It seems to me that the trick is to not cut them back after a certain time in the fall. Once they stop growing, if you cut the tips, they don't blossom.
Yes, anything that blooms in the spring needs to be cut back right after bloom. Otherwise, the shrub will set buds and you'll be cutting off the next year's potential flowers.
