[she laces her fingers in an attempt to make herself less tense, rubbing a thumb over the back of her hand as she remembers something. something horrible.]

Harsh. Sometimes they don't mean to be annoying.

What better way to teach them better, hmm?

[There is a sly glean to him that makes it somewhat uncertain whether he's really kidding or not. But his smile is friendly.]

[drown them in the lake]

-- I am never good with children, so I don't know.

[she purses her lips, smooths the folds of her skirt and slips her hands in her pockets. september feels awkward, talking to someone who isn't aiden or anyone else, but she can't always be picky.]

Not having them, or not being around them, might be better.

They are everywhere, much like cockroaches.

[This turn of phrase clearly amuses him, he's staring at the ground, the image of scurry little pests crushed under shiny patent leather shoes adance in his head.]

But, supposedly, they are the future.

[He looks up at her sideways, quirking another smile.]

And how do you feel about the the future, my dear?

[and she agrees. september remembers yog-sothoth and his women. but she's not about to agree with that to just anyone.]

No. Not really like that.

['my dear'? oh man. creeper senses. she is not anyone's dear, even if it was said in jest. she frowns at that, and more at his question. what about the future? it's not for her to answer that.]

What about it?

Does it interest you.

[He watches her curiously. Is, in fact, quite a creeper, but she's really not his type.]

[she will be keeping her distance, all the same!

and to that, she just shrugs. what kind of question is that? not for her. not for her. not for her.]

Now is too late. Tomorrow is too soon. What else?

[It's the sort of question which tells him rather a lot about her.]

And what does that make yesterday?

[He fiddles out a cigarette, looking up at her before proposing:]

A waste? A dream, perhaps.

You ask too much. [another frown.] What's it to you?

[He likes that answer, and smiles as he lights his cigarette.]

Curiosity. A vice of mine.

I suppose it's better than some others.

[or it's just as worse. probably just as worse.

the smoke makes her uncomfortable -- she never did like the smell -- but she says nothing about it, only makes a face as she watches him.]

[He also likes teenage boys, but there are some vices which never leave one's bedroom, yes?]

There are some unfortunate individuals in the world.

[He agrees, and makes note of her expression. He drops the cigarette and grinds it out with a polite little bow of his head. He is, of course, a gentleman.]

... thanks.

[said rather blandly, but she actually appreciates it. she just doesn't like the idea that perhaps she has been saying too much. september thinks it's silly, either way. it's only been a few sentences, there's no reason for her to feel so awkward. but she doesn't know how to play normal without aiden to anchor her, and she doesn't like having to deal with others, she really doesn't.

so insular, the god will say, and she doesn't like that, but yes, sometimes it's true. sometimes.

but it's not polite to leave a conversation hanging, so she tries to continue it, either way.]

It's too bad for them. But I don't know anyone close to me like that, so it doesn't really matter.

[a lie. she'd count as one of those individuals, and aiden as well, and bryce, and everyone else. but whatever.

some vices are more difficult than others.]

[He looks at her, amusement in his expression. He finds her silence rather telling, especially in correlation to what they had discussed about the future.]

What a lucky life you must lead.

[The irony in his voice is subtle. He does not claim to know her too well, they've only just met, after all.]

I've had my share of it, yes.

[not entirely a lie. she may get the hang of this.]

I mean, who hasn't?

How true.

[He offers a dramatic sigh.]

But we can yet dream of a perfect world.
