He's never going to get back the good humor he used to have, might be a bit less haunted around the eyes, but there's still anger--(was always some anger, that's what the disaffected youth thrived on, and he was still that)--and there's still a sharp determination that comes into him whenever Temple is the subject of discussion.

He doesn't like the idea that a) he can't keep Temple out of trouble all on his own and b) that Kelly might have anything to say about how he takes care of his brother.]
