Something you want me to hear, Christopher?

Not truly. But: I have never understood why I'm your favourite.

[She tilts her head a little before she responds carefully,]

Because you're beautiful.

[Because your father is sweet. Because Lucia is a senseless bully like her father. Because Hector is cold like his.]

[He also picks his words carefully, because having her say that is important, and he doesn't want to rebuff it. But it doesn't really answer the small, fleeting concerns that he never allows to grow into true worries.]

Is that... enough, for you? I don't fit here, mother. I stay, but I'll never really have a place. Not like Lucia or Hector.

[She knows she uses the children. She had been able to tell as soon as they'd gotten here, how they'd flocked to her. She'd never imagined such a thing before, but she liked it. Three pretty little things to love her no matter what she did.]

She would follow you if you went.

[Lucia would, Rachel knows, sees it in her eyes. She inherited it from her father. If they go, she loses the pieces of their fathers too. She doesn't like it.]

And I'd miss you both terribly.

[He sees all those feelings of ownership and using, has always seen them, and they really just demonstrate how different he is. Hector is the better son, in that respect, and even Lucia with her preference for physical violence fits better in the world of social politics than Chris does. He has his moments, a sharp mind and wit, but it's really just difficult for him to pay attention to the things that the rest of his family regard as truly important.

But he loves his mother, and his sister, and his brother. He reaches for her, and he does that so rarely, taking her hands.]

I stay.

[Motherhood had not been such an ill fit to her, in the end. Her sisters won't match what she has either. She curls her fingers with his, loves her boy.]

I'm glad. I'm happy with our family together.

[The children and her. Jules lurking around the edges, loves and cares for them like his own, when he's in the mood to, otherwise he's absent and unnoticed.]

[Their family. But there's two missing from that set, for Chris. One that Rachel has no real ties to, and then the other. He looks down at their linked hands, asking softly.]

Do you miss him?

[Miss him. The whore with the sweet smile and dark eyes that she brings into Jules' bed whenever she can get her hands on him. Keep him through the night, curled into his side. Quiet dreams in the night.]

Sometimes. [When she's alone. She hates to be alone and sometimes he's the firs thing in her mind. She finds him in other odd places in her life.] I don't really know him.

[Perhaps he is collecting up things he has in common with her, but a small part of him is pleased to hear it, to feel it, despite the fact that it means she has these small moments of sadness. It is good that Acacio has people that miss him, people that aren't tied to him by blood like Christopher is.]

That's okay. [He smiles, softly. His father's smile.] He doesn't really know himself.

[She lets go of one of his hands to gather him closer, kisses the curve of his forehead lightly, murmurs there,]

So I've noticed, but you know him.

[She could be jealous, she supposes, but she can't actually summon the emotion up. She thinks back on the last time she had seen him. Christopher and missing him had been the main topics. She ruffles her fae boy's hair.]

And he was happy to know you.

...how did she end up being such a good mum? knaveofcuckoos March 27 2010, 16:11:18 UTC
[He's truly touched by that, smile growing. Too tall to press into her, but perhaps he feels his age for a moment, really still a boy by most standards. Loved, proud and happy.]

[She notes his smile with a mother's pleasure.]

All three of us will go to dinner next time. Just so I can see your pretty faces side by side.

When I finally ruin him. Will that finally make me your favorite, mother?

[ He knows, even though he's the youngest, he is by no means special. Not like Lucia and certainly not like Christopher. Just a boy armed with nothing but cruelty and his father's cold stare. ]
