[ A bird of fire descends softly and agile towards him, flames of blue and red and pink extinguishing as she shakes them off, replaced with feathers of fiery colours, lands on his shoulder. It is a big bird, the size of an eagle, yet still a youngster. Gently, the beak grazes the Black Dog's ear and it chirps in a sing-song tune. ]

[ Blackie barks out a laugh in surprise, turning to look at the great bird now twittering away on his shoulder. He makes it a point to not bare his teeth, though he is inclined to. ]

Have you no answer?

[ She ruffles the feathers a little and chirps again, shaking her head for a minute to comb her beak through it, before it hops out of his shoulder and to the floor. A burst of flames then-- ]

[ --and the girl appears from it. She's naked but with no shame, for she doesn't really know what taboo nudity wields. She smiles, innocently, and tilts her head. ]

Warmth. My answer, it is warmth.

[ This gets him to bare teeth in a bright grin at her. No shame, just like any true animal, especially one so newly come from her nest. ]

Then, by your answer, you will always know comfort.

Yes, I hope so. [ She nods, a smiley creature by nature. ] If warmth leaves me, I will be no more.

[ Perhaps to make the point, Blackie goes about the task of unbuttoning his coat and shrugging out of it, one arm after the other. He knows she does not need the thing -- neither for modesty or for warmth -- but is the gesture that matters. Carefully he goes about draping it over her bare shoulders. ]

No. That will not happen, Birdie. You will endure, burn and endure again. As you were meant to.

[ She gives him a thankful smile, wraps the coat around herself. ]

Yes, I hope so too. I don't want to burn so soon, though. Perhaps I'll fly with you for a while longer, yes. Perhaps, maybe.

[ A slight nod of his head. ]

If that'd please you. The company I tend to keep comes and goes as they wish, as do I. The same is true for you. But if you wish me to follow, I will. They are more worldly than you are and require less attentiveness.

But Blackie, Black Dog, I have nowhere to go. If you follow, won't you be lost when you need a direction?

If I follow, Birdie, then you are my direction. That is what it means to follow, even if there is nowhere to go.

But what about someone you love, you like? Don't you have that, to have a direction, to follow them instead of the wandering fire bird?

[ The smallest of shrugs. ]

Not all manner of creatures wish to be followed, Red Bird.

Then don't follow them, Blackie. [ Her voice is sweet, encouraging. It's almost a singing tune she speaks in, but not quite. ] Walk along with.

[ Another grin -- sharp and quick. He intends to. ]

Have you made any other friends? The world is new and large. And there is magic waiting to find you.
